Is criticizing the way someone raises their kids the most offensive thing you can do?

Seems like the 3rd rail of social interaction. Maybe some kind of racial comment would set someone off quicker?

ETA: Besides doing something illegal.

Pooping on their baker's rack > criticizing their parenting.

It is offensive only because you are exposing a person for performing poorly at their #1 job & bringing up something they obviously have guilt about. It is a defense mechanism.

If you are a good parent, no one will ever question your parenting in the first place.

I still wonder how that party guest pulled that off without being noticed.

I've never had anyone criticize how I raise my kids. I do receive tons of complements on how I'm a good dad though.

Constructive criticism is one thing. Unfortunately, raising a kid often feels like you are just doing the best you can manage. People are very defensive because of this.

I think pushing your philosophy on other parents is rude. However, stepping in and making suggestions based on a pattern of certain behaviors may be warranted with family and close friends.

It also helps if you have some facts to back up your reasoning and not just come off as holier than though.

For example, we didn't really let our son watch TV at home before age 2. There are numerous studies to support the benefits of this. When we would go over to other people's homes that had young kids watching TV we didn't make comments or remove our son from the room.

I've noticed most people that criticize others for the way they raise their children, tend to not have children.

What kind of feedback do you get on your use of the word complement?

Have you heard of Mom Blogs?

They will inevitably find something you aren't doing right, and then blast you on the blog.

shite. As a woman, I sit and watch other women be complete bitches over something as stupid as breastfeeding vs. formula. And that's only the tip of the iceberg.

if they are trashy = very offensive

if they are logical\normal = viewed as constructive criticism
