seems to be that boomers were the last generation to enjoy and actively built models.

I bought my 12 year old son a model kit (Corsair WWII fighter) from Hobby Towne in BR. Wife thought I was wasting my money. "He won't be interested in that."
But, he loved it and finished it within a couple of weeks. Not exactly a work of art, but he enjoyed it.

Model building when I was a kid was pretty much a very common thing with planes, boats and cars leading the way for many builders to undertake.
I can honestly say I've not seen or heard of anyone in my immediate or extended family that does so now.
Kids are too busy with computer games and cellphones from what I see.

I've been building models since I was a kid. Right now, we are in a golden era of modeling.
Many kids are starting to pursue the hobby via Gunpla and other anime-related subjects.
The number of new kits being introduced, along with the number of new paints, tools, aftermarket parts, books, etc., is higher than I've ever seen.
I think it went through a pretty big downturn for a while, but it is enjoying a resurgence.
If your interested take a look at Modelers Social Club, it's a forum like TD, but aimed at modeling.

Dying?
Don't think so.
I got back into it about 18 months ago
Loads of youtube content to learn from.
Enjoy it immensely, but seemingly spend more on the tools and paints than on models
Some builds....
Some Mustangs
Porsche & Impala
Spit, Hurricane, Stuka & Mosquito
In Work: F-16
Edit add...
This guy is insane

I built a lot of estes rockets as a kid. don't see them in stores much like michaels, but hobby lobby usually has a few, but the engines are tough to find in the right sizes.
I did those as well. Also had a bunch of different Cox airplanes. String controled.
I can still mess that cox fuel burning. Had some fun with those things as a kid. My old town had a hobby shop that sold all that stuff. I loved going in there as a adult as well.

One thing that hasn’t helped is models no longer being sold at Target and WMT.
Hobby Lobby and Michael’s has some.
There was a hobby store here in West Monroe if you can believe that. Didn’t live long.

We Gen Xers and later generations were too dumb to build models, so they marketed Shrinky Dinks to us instead.

I'm kinda thinking about picking up a Model Factory Hiro 1/12 scale kit for a change of pace.
No weathering on one of these.
Unless you want to present it as post 24hours at Le Mans.

Yes. I just thank my lucky stars that my own hobby (operating a ham radio while cross-dressing as a female Starfleet officer) is alive and well.
ETA got to Australia on 15 meters tonight and later a guy at Chevron winked at me

What I do now. Really like ww2 planes and will continue to do them till I can’t. Once the kids are moved out will likely expand to tanks and other ww2 stuff. Have a p40 in the box just waiting till I get the time.

I hope it's not dying. I'm just getting back into it after a long long time - since I was a teenager. Daughters both in college, no more basketball games or track meets or archery matches; I don't have to repair bows or fletch 100+ arrows every week for the archery team or help with homework any more.
I went ahead and invested in an airbrush setup; I sure couldn't afford one when I was a kid. Got a little stash built up, I am looking forward to it.
Taking up models and bullet casting and black powder handloading, maybe in the odd hours I'll do a review of calculus and get into some higher math.
Got to keep doing something.

How long does it take to build one of these desk toys?
Posted on 9/3/24 at 9:33 pm to sidewalkside
Some still do but in general I'd say definitely. Same with RC planes

We used to buy model planes and ships at the dime store, put minimal effort into putting the model together, then take great joy into blowing it up.
