Is a stranger more important than your children or wife?

If you get involved in an altercation that has deadly force there is the possibility that you might be killed, effectively depriving your family of a father or husband for the benefit of a stranger. In that moment the stranger or strangers took precedent over your family.

I’m not trying to dissuade you from getting involved, just considering all the angles.

I’ll console your wife after you’re gone.

How old are you? Just a guess you never served in the military and never even considered it?

I'm at the beach. I see a young boy I know nothing about out in the surf apparently drowning. You asking me if I'm thinking "do I try to save the kid knowing I might also drown and leave my family fatherless?"

There's only one answer to that question.

Something else to consider is *81million Americans think you are out hunting and killing minorities and want to defund your career.

Now ask the same question for a 50 year old homeless man floundering in the surf.

If it’s domestic between two men, hell nah.
If it’s a crime happening to an innocent, maybe if I had a good feeling I could neutralize the threat. I have no idea how I would react in a situation like that. I don’t think any of us do.

If you feel this way you have no business being in Law enforcement. Go be a fricking plumber or accountant or something. Every cop that waited outside that school is a fricking coward and I will celebrate their deaths when they get gunned down by the fricking cartel or something.

How do I know he's homeless? Holler at him first to check out his social status before making my decision? Jeez.

When you take a job to protect others, you have a duty to the community.

We are coded to survive. Its a good point that some of you may not like but its true.

Scientists did an experiment...put monkeys moms in a room with their babies...scientists turned the heat up on the floor...all the moms picked up there babies...when the floor got too hot they all put their babies down and stood on them.

You think people do heroic acts just to be called a hero knowing that they could lose their own life in the process? Jeez.

No, it is just an expression.

I appreciate that you answered the initial question.

If you served, then you have training and while you are serving it is your job to protect strangers. The OP's question is valid, even for an ex-military man, but he needs more details. It is a matter of why you get involved and the specifics of the moment.

If two drug dealers are shooting at each other, I'm going to duck and cover then call the cops.

There are situations that may pull me in but I am going to try be rational in my decisions. If kids are involved, it would be hard to not react but I've never been in that situation to know what I would actually do. I have intervened in a situation on two occasions involving a physical altercation between two people but deadly force was not involved.
