The dealers are setup to speed up the process, but you can take your car to any certified place.
The repair shop is reimburressed from the manufacturer. Make sure whatever repair shop is ok doing that, so you do not have to.
Some larger repair chains may be willing, however some local shops may not.

If it's major work like a transmission issue and you do not want to pay anything for it....... just let the dealer handle it.
This is what I was trying to get at with my response.

It's actually illegal for a manufacturer to force you to maintain your vehicle thru the dealer network.
OP isn't talking about maintenance. He's talking about the actual warranty work.

They are putting you to the back of the line because warranty work pays them a much lower shop rate than regular work.
Like someone mentioned before, call the warranty company and make sure the shop you want to take it is certified to complete repairs. I always bring mine to the dealership for every service visit until the warranty is up. But my dealership is good. Main reason I do that is I can prove that all my regular maintenance was performed like suggested and I don't have to dig for paperwork as they have it all in the computer.

There are "authorized warranty repair" places. Your warranty information should have a phone number, call them and see what suggestions they give you.
Dealership service departments are slammed everywhere. If it's going to take more than a few days, see if they will give you a loaner.

As long as it’s being done by a certified technician, maintenance performed not by the dealer DOES NOT void your warranty!!

has had the vehicle since noon yesterday (appointment scheduled for 2:45) and still hadn’t looked at it by 8:30 this morning
Always tell them you need the vehicle or even better that you will wait. Then call and bug them like every hour. If you say they dont need the vehicle they will push you to the end every time.

They can only deny warranty work if your mods caused that problem. They aren't gonna deny a CD player issue b/c you added a toolbox

Dealer finally looked at it after me calling to tell them I was coming to get it. Guy said, “it started and drove just fine.”
I reminded them that it’s occasional and can be fixed by restarting the car. Guy said, “okay.”
I asked if they would drive it or start it up some more to see if they can get it to act up and he said no.
I guess I’ll have to wait until the transmission actually blows up or see if some other dealer will know how to handle it.
