IR-2018-251, December 14, 2018 WASHINGTON — The Internal Revenue Service today issued the 2019 optional standard mileage rates used to calculate the deductible costs of operating an automobile for business, charitable, medical or moving purposes.
Beginning on Jan. 1, 2019, the standard mileage rates for the use of a car (also vans, pickups or panel trucks) will be:
58 cents per mile driven for business use, up 3.5 cents from the rate for 2018,
20 cents per mile driven for medical or moving purposes, up 2 cents from the rate for 2018, and
14 cents per mile driven in service of charitable organizations. The business mileage rate increased 3.5 cents for business travel driven and 2 cents for medical and certain moving expense from the rates for 2018. The charitable rate is set by statute and remains unchanged.
Get them mileage checks baws.
I don't drive daily for my job anymore, but there are several times a year where I choose to because I drive a fairly new and very dependable vehicle.

I think the new tax laws changed who can claim mileage and who can't.
I think if you use a company vehicle, then the company can claim it, but if you use your own vehicle you cannot.

4 miles buys a gallon. I love it.

Currently yes. Not bad at all. Did feel like it is a pretty big increase anyway however.

Government shouldn't be involved in this...at all.

It's amazing how ignorant most people are on tax laws. It's directly affects everyone daily and most people have no idea what the laws are.

Feel free to calculate and substantiate the actual costs of using your vehicle then. It’s an optional method of convenience.
Or are you just arguing against income tax in general?

Driving a car is anything but optional. It's a necessity. Our society necessitates it based on the way it's physically structured.
My main grievance with the law, the way it's written, is that it's intervening on business use. First off, this should be private, as is the business itself. Second, wtf is the government involved in whatever purpose I have to own a private, necessary method of transportation?

Absolutely this, too. I don't believe the IRS should exist.

You've done well explaining your position here. Congrats on being able to type.
What a waste of time you are.

Who said driving a car was optional?

In what sense? You can always maintain a separate vehicle strictly for business use and depreciate it or immediate expense if allowable under 179.

Let me be clear: Using the standard mileage rate as a means to estimate the cost of use is optional.

Do you think you should get a deduction for personal use of your vehicle?
