When people talk about the best states, there are some common answers (MA, CA, VT, NY, CO), but Iowa is almost never mentioned.

This state in the heart of the American Midwest, its rolling hills covered with corn, soybeans and other crops, its ever-present pork some of the most sumptuous in the nation, is home to just over 3 million people. They are overwhelmingly white, 92 percent. And if it’s perceived as simply a farm state, Iowa has the nation’s highest high school graduation rate, 90 percent. And two-thirds of the state’s high school graduates go directly to college – matching the national average.

U.S. News & World Report ranked Iowa at No. 6 in the country in its Best States rankings released Tuesday — which evaluates all 50 states across a range of criteria, from education and health care to infrastructure and economy. This is the first year U.S. News has ranked states.

In determining Iowa's sixth overall spot, the state placed:
-fifth in health care
- sixth in opportunity and eighth in education
- 10th in government
-16th in both crime/corrections and infrastructure
- 30th in economy.

In calculating the rankings, each of the seven categories were assigned weightings based on a national survey that asked people to prioritize each subject in their state:
Health Care: 18 percent
Education: 16 percent
Infrastructure: 14 percent
Crime & Corrections: 14 percent
Opportunity: 14 percent
Economy: 13 percent
Government: 10 percent In calculating the rankings, each of the seven categories were assigned weightings based on a national survey that asked people to prioritize each subject in their state:

Massachusetts claimed first, which had the best ranking in education and was runner-up in health care. New Hampshire followed in second and Minnesota in third. North Dakota (fourth) and Washington (fifth) rounded out the first five. U.S. News calls these top five states "geographically and politically diverse." Arkansas (48th), Louisiana (49th) and Mississippi (50th) closed out the bottom portion of the list.

According to the 2010 Census, 91.3% of the population was White (88.7% non-Hispanic white), 2.9% was Black or African American, 0.4% American Indian and Alaska Native, 1.7% Asian, 0.1% Native Hawaiian and other Pacific Islander, 1.8% from two or more races. 5.0% of the total population was of Hispanic or Latino origin (they may be of any race).
Collin agrees.

Sure is pretty farm country. Was great driving through going to Omaha.

The people that came up with the rankings have obviously never been to Iowa.

That's weird, I was just wondering if four-letter words could be US States.

I have family in Iowa City, great college town. I spent a few days in Des Moines recently and it's a killer town, too.
The state is mostly flat as frick, but I love me some Templeton Rye whiskey.

Yeesh.
I also find it odd that "6th in opportunity" correlates with 30th in economy.

Iowa is great except salt water is far away.

Lived there for 14 months and loved every second of it. 14 of the best months of my life.
Would like to return someday.

Iowa is my favorite state during deer season when I travel there every other year. Other than that , I would hate to live there. Cold, combined with the wind, is almost unbearable- unless you're dressed in about 6 layers. The gravel based country roads, combined with the ice/snow and salt is terrible on a vehicle as well.
