I guess my point is, who are we to know what's inside that guy's head? Yeah, we can call him a racist, we can believe he's a racist, but it's kind of like the people who identify as this or that. It's not really my place to tell you you're not this or that. If you want to identify as a moonwalking, Colombian midget, more power to you.

Lol. So I could go up to a black person and call him the n word but then just say I’m not racist and it makes everything ok?

If I thought it was okay in my mind, then yeah. I mean, can you define, 'ok'?

I really don't understand why people worry about this stupid shite. It's not interesting nor does it have any real effect.

Kneeling for the flag, Don't Give A fuk.

Painting swastikas on your face, don't give a frick.

Identifying as a tranny, don't give a frick.

Etc

Normally I'd agree more, but he decided to do it in view of a school that, worth noting, is 60% minority.

It's his right, but I'd support the community making his life miserable in a nonviolent way till he takes it down, so the students students dont have to see that.

People that act like that and have no empathy, especially when children are involved, piss me off. I'm happy to see people supporting the. I do feel empathy that the guy is a hateful prick, it is a terrible way to live I'm sure, but hate begets hate and this can only further divides and not being people together.

Why wouldn't they? Is it because they're ignorant? They should think I'm a racist if I fly to stars and bars because that was the flag of the Confederacy and the people that would think that, believe, rightly or wrongly, that that was the sole reason for everybody that was involved with the Confederacy for fighting the war.

While a good piece of knowledge to have to understand history and how symbols can gain power, it has no bearing as to the current meant of the symbol in today's culture

I guess I just don't believe that people should be prisoners of the dynamic and ever-changing wims of a fickle and ignorant society.

It's also not fair to people who actually want to use symbols for other meanings just because some asshats who became popular decided to use it for something that most Society disagrees with.

I guess we should start calling out all the people who display the cross - you know, because it was a symbol of cruelty, torture and death originally, the fact that it stands for love, forgiveness and salvation now shouldn't matter

Ummm. You just made my own point for me.

Thanks?

Yes, there is technically a small chance he's just pushing the boundaries of the 1st Amendment because he loves this country and her freedoms so much. There's a far, far bigger chance he's a racist a-hole.

I don't discount the possibility that guy's a giant racist but I'm willing to bet he's either just really fricking stupid or a giant troll. If he's the first two then I don't really care too much for him. But if he's a giant troll, I can definitely appreciate that. This society needs to be trolled fricking hard as hell right now. Everybody's a giant quivering pussy and they need to get over themselves.

The confederate flag (battle flag of northern virginia army) has only been used for one purpose.

The tilted black swastika on a white background has only been used for one purpose.

Calling them what they are is not confusing the facts or history.

That's what I'm thinking too but I'm thinking about maybe flying the Gadsden instead of the American flag. I think the Gadsden better represents the founding ideal of this country. I've also always greatly preferred the rattlesnake as a national symbol over the bald eagle. Ben Franklin said it best

No problem with that as long as they don't infringe on his rights or frick with his property.

I was speaking in general there, not to this specific situation.

I said in another post that the guy obviously used some version of the Third Reich war flag so I'm not sure what point he's trying to make unless he just likes the way the flag looks and to be honest, it is a cool looking flag. I don't really like the ANV flag. Always thought it was kind of generic.

Without googling, tell me what it meant before.

Also, context clue, what meaning would you think a person intended when pairing a confederate flag with a swastika?

Which flag? The Gadsden? Which beliefs are you referring to? I'm not aware of any specific beliefs that that flag represents other than freedom and liberty. I would hope that those would be ideals that everyone would share.

You are arguing against symbols and essentially the nature of human communication.

I want to use my middle finger as a sign of welcome when I meet someone. My friends may understand but when talking about society at large, I'd be an a-hole to everyone I meet who is simply trying to attract attention and create a commotion.

Also, I'd call neither the rise of christianity or the nazi movement a whim of society. These are generational movements to say the least which changed the course of history - thus the impact on symbolism.

I totally agree about certain movements such as the ok symbol thing people are freaking out about. Today's culture takes it too far, but not I'm relation to this situation imo.

ETA: I think we understand each other though and have some common ground though

Nope. It was use as a battle flag in the Civil War. It was bastardized as a symbol of hatred by democrats in the KKK, and further bastardized as a symbol of hate by neo-nazis.

You can’t hold people responsible for other people’s perception of the symbolism of an object. I view the battle flag the same way I view the Gadsden flag and others, a symbol of resistance against a tyrannical government.
