The British royals have Elizabeth's last name (Windsor) instead of Philip's (Mountbatten).

In other words, if you do this, you're an inbred German.

Well, I was in middle school when it premiered.

And it probably was because he's "real" old money, but pretend it wasn't.

Only those who won't succeed (as in the literal legal sense).

And comparing the most prominent hereditary family in the world to our founding families, Brahmins, and other newer old money folks (Rockefellers, Kennedys, etc) is not really a good practice.

If you're a guy it's pretty douchey. It's like you're trying to get by on your family's merits because your own aren't enough. At least that's the situation you are painting. I will say I'm "Janet Smith's" son (not her real name) to people who might have known her growing up just so they have a frame of reference. That's a rare situation though.
