I am a victim of this closure. Made my living here for 30 years. So many people and small businesses will suffer in this area.

“I wonder what will happen to all the land they own?”

They are selling off large portions of their land and have been doing so for quite awhile. There was a large tract they owned 1/2 mile from where I live, sold it probably 10 years ago.
Boise Cascade sold some 400,000+ acres in Deridder, some years ago.

Timberland is not good investment anymore.I am small tree farmer.Price I got ‘86 in nominal dollars was quite a bit more than what it sells for now, adjusted for inflation it was tremendously more,

That is if you can even find someone to cut the trees.Hard to find someone for small acreage like I have.

Not arguing the general point; but in this case, the closures would have been in the works since before the election. IP started reducing headcount at HQ in East Memphis many months back.

Is it even possible for that area to be more economically depressed than it already is?

Well it sounds like we are about to find out. I hate it for the town and the area. That kind of loss could be the final nail in the coffin for the area.

Praying for y'all and everyone out there. Knowing families just bought houses, just had babies, makes it even scarier.

And I mean that seriously. A business such as a paper mill or some other factory, if it doesn’t have a sufficient market for its products locally can look to expand its markets in other areas or overseas.

You are talking out of your arse.

IP closed a plant in Beaumont, Texas last year.

Was that Trump’s America?

Mills close all the time and the reason is almost always expense.

The older mills are not efficient and cost too much to maintain.

This was a phase out.

It’s about the only thing keeping Bogalusa afloat, if it ever closes down it will be the final death blow to Bogalusa.

Yes, this mill is 50 years old. There is another IP mill (Mansfield) in close proximity that is newer and bigger.

It’ll hurt timber revenue in Grant Parish.Did a timber thinning couple years ago, pulpwood was hauled to Campti.Only $5/ton which was pitiful compared to years past when paper mill in Pineville was open.Hauling to Mansfield will hurt price even more.
My timber is getting close to needing to be clearcut. Not sure what to do,trees get too big only place that buy big trees is Almond Brothers in Coushatta and they only want the butt section for pine flooring.

In light of those incoming Canada tariffs, IP may want to reconsider.

Mansfield is an extremely profitable mill for IP.

And I mean that seriously. A business such as a paper mill or some other factory, if it doesn’t have a sufficient market for its products locally can look to expand its markets in other areas or overseas. U.S. wood products are exported every day. But with the Trump tariffs, and foreign tariffs, foreign markets are closed.

This is one way that tariffs can actually harm US manufacturing, rather than “bring it back.” If your new or existing plant can only sell locally, it may not be able to survive. Expect these upside-down trade policies to shutter more manufacturing and farming operations due to the closure of foreign markets.

You're not wrong about tarriffs in general but that's not what happened here.
