You're dull.

In the scientific community, people postulate ideas through research and experiment.

After which, other people argue/test this postulation as to whether it be true or accepted.

Unless you blindly agree with all research data. Which wouldn't shock me.

There are just so many dumb people out there that it's actually detrimental to my psychological health for me to try to communicate with them.

That said, there's a fine line between not constantly being on social media and not always looking for someone to gab to, and being an incel hermit who no one wants to talk to anyway.

By the very definition of social interaction, it's not. There needs to be some exchange between people for interaction. How does your study define it?

ok, what does that have to do with intelligent people choosing to be less social?

I think this is probably true for those of the highest IQ. Gifted people often have social disorders

have you ever seen memento?

there is a story where a guy with short term memory loss was assessed by teh protagonist as having a psychological, not physical, issue, and thus, his insurance claim was denied. however, as the movie goes on the protag reveals that sammy's mannerisms and physical characteristics that he used were a ruse that he had developed over time to seem more normal

i think a lot of elite-intelligent people develop similar things when interacting socially, normally. like you learn 50 "small talk' things to say to people that get you through 99% of all interactions in that area. you learn how to read people's reactions when they say stuff that doesn't make sense but is intended to elicit a reaction (often humor) so you react appropriately. etc etc

I think most intelligent people quickly realize that social media is dominated by people who can not reason and have very small frames of reference. It's a platform built for ego and pride. I also think that wise people tend to realize that with other people, it is not the width of the river, but the depth of the water.

I deleted my FB account years ago. My family life is a 10/10. My kids are knocking it out of the park and I focus on being the best Dad I can be. My friendships are deep ( I have four or five friends I talk or text with almost every day) but I avoid parties and casual get togethers with acquaintances for the most part. I have always thought that your river can be wide or deep but not both. Maybe it's more intelligent to focus on true and deep relationships.

If I need to connect on an idea or a hobby or interest, I can do it here with limited emotional investment. I can say my piece and then move on with the important stuff .

this thread reminds me of a thread this weekend where people were discussing how phones have warped social interactions

like, it's one thing for another person to HAVE to have their phone nearby 100% of the time, but it's irrational (bordering on insanity) that it's insulting to those people if YOU don't have YOUR phone handy to meet their demands

total narcissism

social media and instant, low-level communication have made people feel they're way more important than they actually are

Yup, those outlets are just for self promotion and trying to make yourself feel better (e.g. the pic you posted of your trip to France that no one gives a frick about but got 40 likes from your friends). People who have a deeper understanding of life realize all of that shite is so superficial and fleeting

i really dont understand why self-pride and narcissism are such bad things anyways...

whatever, using social media is a great tool to promote your content, its smart to take advantage of it...

I see it the same way you do and always have . I have a very successful show biz friend ( best friends 7th - 10th grade) who should be living the dream but comes across as possibly the saddest and most narcissistic person I know.

I am a extreme- beginner Buddhist practitioner surrounded by much deeper spiritual thinkers that have eschewed materialism and embraced simplicity. So I focus on a self- examination of humility and ego . And I understand very profoundly how flattery and manipulation work. I use it very deftly professionally. But it's all an illusion. And every intelligent person gets that on a very basic level. We are the heroes of our own narratives . And only we really care . And even that is usually a hindrance to wisdom.

Look - I got yelled at this week and almost assaulted by a mentally ill person . I was calm and even though the adrenaline hit me I maintained my disconnect. I literally thought of the word " compassion " and envisioned that word between me and the guy . That was a moment of personal growth 1000 times making some political point on FB. To take adversity and hostility with humility- that's a big moment for me. As we get older hopefully we focus more on these type things.

You're biased by your intelligence

When it's average/dumb people doing it, it's a different monster

Just like if it's a true sociopathic doing it, it can become real evil
