This is increasingly untrue. More and more political activism from the bench which is scary as shite

Is it though? Pledging allegiance to a flag and swearing an oath to support and defend a constitution are polar opposites.

One is close to autocracy and the other is defending a set of principles.

Anyone call child social services yet?

Taught =/= forced

1st amendment > dumb teachers

Besides, what reasonable person still recites that shite after the age of 13 or so?

Bingo

Now where's my daily Koran readings for 1st graders!?

When will schools realize you can't make kids do things. They're there for the sole purpose of teaching reading, writing, history, science and math.

The Pledge was part of morning announcements in my district all the way through high school. They also included the Texas Pledge.

I probably haven't recited either since middle school. Never was a problem for any of my teachers. But then I always stood up.

This definitely sounds like something a first grader would say.

Pledge of allegiance is and shouldn't be part of the curriculum, it mentions "one nation under God" which really shouldn't be there since there's this thing called separation of church and state. No part of the allegience actually makes a kid smarter or more knowledgeable. History is a part of all curriculum, but if some kids don't want to learn it for whatever reason, they shouldn't have to, their the ones losing the chance to learn valuable information.

In the end, school is just a place for kids to go while mommy and daddy are at work and aren't much more than babysitters, particularly in the younger grades

To be fair, forcing students to recite things is a form of teaching, whether it's the periodic table, a famous poem, the preamble, the Gettysburg Address, the anthem, or the pledge.

Liberalism is a disease, and they like to spread it to the youth.

I do have some issues with the pledge of allegiance. It's a very strange oath to ask of kids. Based on the timing of its development, and the way everyone in that time period thought the world would end up, it is most definitely a propaganda piece. One that has also been used by the fed and church to create a weird amalgamation combining American capitalism and exceptionalism with Christianity.

However, overall I think it can be harmless if kids are actually able to think for themselves. Instead of being small bowls which are filled by the personalities of whoever created their curriculum.

All of that being said. This kid is not offended 1 iota. His mother is indoctrinating him in ways far worse than the pledge would in any normal upbringing.

Or she is simply trying to get money out of the school. She either lost a husband who provided, or an ex who gave her child support. Now she needs to recoup that income, and she thought this was her best bet.

She was probably right...

Do we now not believe in a parents right to raise to their children as they see fit ( which btw is a fundamental right, so long as your not teaching illegal things)?

Hard to see how the staff could have handled this worse. That said, compensation is ludicrous.

I wonder how many of the naysayers here would be fine if you all were forced to recite the Pledge of Allegiance every morning at work? And if you all did not you would be disciplined through HR.

Well there is a SCOTUS case that is EXACTLY like this where they ruled that you cannot force a child to recite the pledge. My wife is a teacher and has her master's during which she had to take several classes on the legalities of administration. I would assume this principle did/should have as well. This SCOTUS case is one of the seminal cases that was taught. I know because I'm a lawyer and helped her through the class. Punitive damages could be left up to a jury if it can be shown they knowingly and willfully knew this was wrong and just did it anyway.

Edit: The SCOTUS case is West Virginia State Board of Ed. v. Barnette from 1943.
