So....they can't stop a car for legitimately not being roadworthy? Brake lights/taillights are kind of important to the driving process. I don't have a problem with the others, but this one is idiotic.

Sure they can. No doubt about it. Another tricky one along those lines at least in Louisiana (and I'd bet many if not most other states) is license plate light being out. Nobody thinks to check that. But they'll get ya in Louisiana for that with the quickness, especially later at night when they're hoping to use that as a precursor to something much more serious, a DWI perhaps.

I've had a turn signal go out and didn't know it. I got stopped for it, and had to do the whole routine. He wrote me a ticket, but told me to just get it replaced and come see him at the courthouse. I did and he threw the ticket out. I wasn't riding around drunk or smoking, though.

I've gotten stopped twice for my license plate light being out. Both times got off with a warning , no ticket.

I took it somewhere got it fixed, next thing you know 1 month later I'm getting pulled over for the same exact thing. I was pissed, how tf a light go out in 1 month.

And why ????

I’ll see if I can find it the reconstruction report, but a Christmas tree air freshener can obstruct the view of a full-size pickup from about 150ft away.

Bad bulbs. I had it happen with the vehicle I have now. I noticed the taillight was out on the driver's side. So, I bought a two-pack of bulbs and replaced it. About two weeks later, I got my oil changed and they said it was out again. They asked if I wanted them to replace it, and I declined because I had the other bulb. Well, I replaced it and went on my way. It wasn't long before a friend who was following me somewhere told me my taillight was out again. I thought that it had to be the other one. Nope, it was the same one. I got another bulb and replaced it, fully expecting it to blow again. It has been going strong over a year now. The only thing I can figure is those two bulbs were just defective.

Actually the Democrats in VA have prohibited a number of things this year for pretext stoppages by LEO:

Playing loud music
Having a loud exhaust
Smelling reefer coming from your car
Not having taillights
and my personal favorite: an expired Inspection tag...they can only stop you if your tag is 4 months past due.

What those idiots did is change it from a 12 month to 15 month renewal period! Dumbasses.

I’ll go read the statute but I’m sure it didn’t say cops can’t issue citations for those things, but simply can’t use it to search your car. That is absolutely a good thing if so. It’s about time we start respecting the 4th Amendment again after the War on Drugs made it meaningless. People have given up too many rights in order to “stop” the spread of a plant.

If someone calls themselves a conservative and supports laws banning air fresheners from mirrors, that person is neither conservative or aware of what conservatism is.

That person would be a huge progressive who wants to design society to fit a certain mold.

And it kills people.
