Propane is your safest bet. My neighbor's parents live in Thibodeaux and none of the generators in their subdivision will run because of gas supply pressure issues. I could go really in depth on this issue and local muncipalities gas supply systems, but a previous poster seemed to have summed it up quite well.

I think that you will find a diesel generator to be a bit expensive. I just installed a 26 kw - anything liquid cooled was over twice the price. Couldn't see something seldom used being worth it. Got because if got tired of hearing my wife go on about having one

Please go into detail. This thread is delivering. You have someone calling the OP an imbecile for spreading this rumor and then OP calling that poster out with a ban bet if he's wrong. So let's get some in depth issues going Who's right, Tomatocantender or Coon?

Gumbo Pot is correct.

The future is hard to predict. Most municipalities simply add on to a system that may have been originally installed 70 years ago, with a very different usage allowance at the time. Adding subdivisions without performing a proper hydraulic study on the gas system and then crossing your fingers is the most common approach.

Adding generators to the calculation more than doubles the assumed gas usage. Some city leaderships make a decision not to include generators in the gas budget

Add to that that some city piping systems have a very low pressure rating because they do not want to pressure test the piping systems. Does not take much more gas demand in some situations to crash the system

Gumbo Pot

So what should the folks in Thibodaux do before a larger hurricane visits them down the road? Do they upgrade to propane with 500 gallon tanks that look like an airplane's fuselage or do they demand their city to upgrade these antiquated lines?

Eta: Just thinking this through, most neighborhoods or HOAs probably won't allow above ground propane tanks, so I guess there's a way to safely bury these things?

in areas like that close to the coast do you really need a generator when most of the time those areas are down for a month or so
I wouldn't want pay that bill for natural gas

I have a 500 gallon propane tank that is buried so out of sight. You can only fill it to 80% and minimum is 20%. I have a 22KW and it is good for up two 2 weeks depending on the electric load applied.

The city actually runs the gas utility and not a company?

Thus is crazy that there’s not enough gas. It’s like imagine if there wasn’t enough electricity or water.

Slippery slope with this one. They'll probably add a tax to do it and that tax will never go away. So you'll pay 1000000000x more than what you'd have originally spent and it'll go to some other item that it wasnt originally intended.

Iron Banks has the correct solution - you can take the matter into your own hands. Propane is about $2.53 a gallon at the moment. You still be at the mercy of the delivery guy.

Otherwise it is a fight with City Hall (or parish council) to upgrade the gas piping system

There was an oversupply of these generators a couple of months ago and they were selling the with a transfer pretty cheap. A lot of capacity was added to many systems

Fuel supply for whole home generators has been an issue in other areas as well. These whole home systems reliability can vary due to other factors as well. For example, one of my neighbor's system wouldn't run when needed for Hur. Ida. Turns out a a common house Gecko had died somewhere in the cicuitry preventing it from running. It wasn't discovered until the need for the generator to be running was over. Another neighbor's whole house generator under a routine maintenance contract for a 6 year old system has had to spend over $2,000 for new circuitry boards not working properly this year. My gasoline powered portable generator has been reliable since Hur. Gustav in 2008 with appropriate oil changes and one tune up. I'm sticking with it considering the frequency of it being used.

How scared are you baws of not having AC for a couple of days?

The panic is real and palpable. My biggest concern when the power goes out is keeping my 2 refrigerators and my large upright freezer going so the food I have in them doesn't spoil.

The wife was freaking out a bit prior to Francine coming ashore even though we are in N.O. and were far to the east of the brunt of the storm.

Hitting at a CAT 2 and rapidly dropping to a CAT 1 once it hit shore made it nothing more than a heavy rainfall with gusty winds in our area. To appease her, I broke out the Tri-Fuel generator I bought a few years ago and hooked it up to the gas line I ran for it and fired it up to make sure it was working fine. We lost power around 6 p.m. for a very brief period with it going out and coming back on over a 20 minute period, and then back on for good after that.

I grew up without A/C in any home or school I ever attended from K-12, so no A/C is not going to kill me.

I'm certain everyone doesn't have an electric HVAC furnace. How does Thibadaux handle cold weather surges for NG furnaces?

lol. Not even close to the same volume.

This.....A home gas fired heater will cycle a few times an hour under normal circumstances and likely be off more than actually burning gas to fuel the heater.

A natural gas fired generator runs constantly and burns far more NG than any home furnace will.

Volume per unit, Gen vs Furnace, of course.

Can you quantify the number of whole home NG generators in a radius vs NG furnaces, and aggregate total usage when temps hit 35 degrees? See what I'm saying?

And deservedly so…….especially since he didn’t bother to go back and fix an obvious misspelling in the title.

Just gave you an upvote because of the hard work you put in for TD on the Covid vax threads from 2020-2022. Saying that, I have no idea what you're trying to say here.

Apologies just the normal OT schtick ala let me ask my butler's assistant to my personal power plant. Thank you for the the acknowledgement, I'm still putting in work.

You sound like a drama queen pussy. Worried about an honest mistake and not the actual subject matter.
