Most of Hawaii outside of the tourist spots and hotels is like living in a southeast Asian slum. Inland Hawaii is als hot and swampy as hell. As someone who has actually lived there, it is a fricking terrible place outside the resort areas.
Meh… I lived on Oahu for a year (Waianae). It’s not as bad as you describe. I saw lots of places I could live happily. And most of the year the weather is damn near perfect.

It's currently 73 degrees in Madison, WI with a low of 58
Madison was on my short list of places to spend the summers. We ended up picking Boulder. Mild summers was a major part of the criteria.

Wife just got back from there and that's what got us started thinking about it. Small towns, rural, and not a lot of real estate, though, as a result
We looked at Vermont for a while and visited a few places. We liked Burlington because we wanted to be close to an airport, close to a college campus, and a place with a walkable downtown. The problem with Burlington was that a lot of the homes are old. After that quickly after leaving downtown you are off the grid. Septic instead of sewer and that sort of stuff. For a place you’re not going to be at full time there were too many issues. We needed something that is turn-key. Somewhere the HOA takes care of everything past the door knob. We didn’t find much of that in Burlington.

Parts of California
I once went to Sacramento. Closest place to get lunch was at one of the malls. I walk over there and it has a huge food court, tons of options. I get my food and notice that there is only seating for about 20 people. It made no sense to me until I looked outside and saw seating for hundreds. I then realized how great the weather must be there for most all of the year.

If you can make it work, the summers here are just plain incredible. It rarely gets in to the 90s, and even when it does, it just feels like you're getting baked by the sun, not sitting in a sauna.
Southwest Idaho (Boise) is much warmer than I expected. Well the last two summers have been very hot. Sun Valley, has a gorgeous summer. There’s almost a twenty degree difference most days.

2700 ft elevation
We've taken many summer driving trips to Colorado (from Louisiana) and I was always amazed at how there was no temperature relief at all until we started going above 5k feet elevation (past Denver).

Currently 101 in Provo today.
I will still run after work and won’t even sweat thru my t shirt.

This is why I’ll never understand people going to Florida for vacation. I just want to fly straight North and feel cool temps again.

I’ve been all over and learned that it gets really hot just about everywhere in the summer. Anything below I-10 gets too hot for too long (April to Oct minimum). Below I-20 gets too hot from May-Sept and below I-40 about June-August with a few days on Sept. Anything north of that gets too cold for too long in the winter. So for me you gotta find that place between I-20-40 that has what you like. I like mountains and beach so I picked a place close enough to both.

I like Flagstaff but the winters can be quite harsh + gritty wind. Sedona is nothing but a tourist trap, pathetic what it has become over the last 15 years.
