The National Weather Service (NWS) radar in Slidell will be relocated to Hammond in the months ahead. The radar was officially taken offline on Monday, November 27, and is expected to remain offline into March 2024. The move approximately 45 miles to the west is designed to improve radar coverage in parts of south Louisiana and southwest Mississippi without causing any significant degradation in coverage elsewhere.

quote:

“Right now, over Baton Rouge, we can only see storms around 6,000-7,000 feet. Once we move the radar and lower the tilt of the radar, we’ll be able to see storms around 1000-3000 feet in Baton Rouge. While we need to see all heights for a full storm analysis, this should help us see tornado formation a little easier.”

quote:

Note that the greatest improvement, indicated by the darkest shades of green, extends from southwest Mississippi through metro Baton Rouge to St. Mary Parish along the coast.

Radar went offline yesterday

They’re eventually going to move the office from Slidell too but that news hasn’t broken yet

I know a private company, Climavision, installed some fill in Doppler radar sites in Chauvin and Franklin to help with coverage for its private clients like Parish EOCs, any one know if this data is on the web yet or you need to buy the data from Climavision?

There is one in West Feliciana also. If you scroll down in the OP's link you can read about them. WAFB's First Alert app has uses those radars. They are very sensitive though. The often show light rain when there is none at the surface.

Never mind I found it. I had to dig through the menu.

Just the Franklin and site North of Baton Rouge.

Just an observation, most TV station weather apps are identical. Since WAFB and Fox 8 are owned by the same company, I also downloaded the WVUE weather app thinking that they would have the Chauvin site since that is their coverage area, but they didn’t.

They did have the same UI and settings as the WAFB app. Ironically, the only other station in NOLA to have its own app was WGNO and the App was a mirror image of the Fox 8 except the logos and station generated content and advertising. So neither New Orleans station included the the Climavision data for their apps, as of this post. That doesn’t mean they haven’t purchased the on air rights for their on air weather systems.
