66 is not old. talk him into driving an rv to Alaska for an over the top trip
At 70, my kids surprised me by modifying my Harley to three wheel so I would not fall over at stop signs
at 76, I have begun to eliminate the the toys that require maintenance.
Off shore boat and motor home
We buy things that we will use through the year, and do not have a lot. of Christmas needs.
Now a 6 pound prime rib roast could get a lot of attention

Impossible to buy old men gifts
The only gift I bought my dad that I know he used was a new bowling ball when composite balls were becoming a thing.
My mom would mail the old hometown weekly newspapers to me every couple of months and I began to see his name wasn't among the high score / series leaders anymore. And I noticed all the hotshots on the PBA Tour had Rhino balls so I went to a bowling store and asked for the latest in ball technology and what a man in his late 50s would want. He hooked me up with a Columbia composite so I bought it undrilled and mailed it to him. He and a buddy went to an alley that had the machinery to drill it and then they started to bowl and by the middle of his second game he found his groove.
When he started to show on the leaders again it was the best feeling in the world. He was second to no man in my eyes.

Back in the day it was Bay Rum then the 1950's and 1960's happened and Madison Avenue gave them new choices but they went with the tried and true that got your grandmother.

Depression and WWII meant maybe 1 dress suit for weddings and Sunday services. Maybe 2 dress shirts. More ties to vary that basic outfit as that was cheapest and took up little space in the corner closet.

Took him to a steak restaurant and he barely ate.
That's very odd behavior. He sounds like a dick.

As you pass 60 those things get heavier and heavier. Must be air particles or something

My dad is 78 with a lot of health issues that keeps him home bound. Every year it gets harder for my sister and I to figure out what to get him. At this point, we cant even buy him a gift card to a restaurant or take him out to eat due to his health. He loves fishing and I would love to take him on a charter but he just cant do it.
He has told us over the past 3 years that we dont have to get him anything. At his age and with all of his health problems, he just wants to spend quality time with his daugthers. So thats my plan.

I usually just say “that is awesome if you want to do that for me” and accept the offer for a gift. My FIL always declines all suggestions for a gift for him and I do something anyway! He’ll say I don’t need that or something like that.

The best gift was when I was married and we brought my dad to the Harley Davidson dealership and he and I convinced a salesman that she was cosigning a motorcycle for him. The panic on her face was his gift for a couple of xmas and birthdays.

Dawgirl, when my Dad got to that age and had everything he wanted or needed, we found a old picture of him with all the family members and put it in a nice frame. His eyes watered along with a big smile when he pulled it away from the wrapping paper. No doubt he was very pleased.
Just a suggestion.
Just a suggestion.

Yep he's got everything he needs or wants. Its been difficult with gifts because of his health.
Thanks for the suggestion but we've already done that.

It's not impossible.....just expensive.
Admittedly not the age quoted in the OP but my boys know all they have to do is buy me a gun. Always love getting a firearm of any kind as a gift.

I just make up random shite and then complain when no one gets me anything off my list.
WW2 carrier pigeon capsules
Survivalist shite (I don’t even camp)
Antique glass target balls
Memberships to local attractions
Glass blowing classes
Pheasant hunting
Rare books
Albums that no one has heard of (I don’t own a record player).
Or tell them that I am just as happy with new socks, a sweater, baseball tickets. Whatever.

I’m at the point in life where all I want is my kids to spend an afternoon watching a game
Thats what Ive been doing for the last few years. Go over to their house and watch as many Georgia games as I can with my father. He does love his football but over the past year, it hasnt been as enjoyable as he falls asleep during the game. Not his fault - He just hasnt slept well in years. He gets it when he can.

I am 66, and I can tell you that a lot of this has to do with not wanting your kids to spend a lot of money, not only on you, but on anything. My kids are 24 and 22 and I want them to keep their money.

Just give him a hug, say thank you for making me into who I am and that you love him. It would the perfect Christmas gift for him
