Nola had more population than Austin until very recently. nothing prevented Nola from being overlapped in population...except the structural issues this thread is discussing. that's kind of the point of this thread
it's like y'all are saying "OK Nola used to be better than these cities, but since they kept improving and Nola slid back, we can't compare them to Nola anymore"

when i first went to austin (circa 2002), it was very close to Nola in population
the reason the comparison is made is b/c it's kept on making itself better while Nola has gotten worse (lost a ton of major companies/jobs in that timespan and lost population iirc)

I think the assumption that Dallas or Atlanta is what all cities should aspire to be is a flawed one.
Nola can and should do more to address the structural problems we all acknowledge exist, but I think you can do that without turning into another cookie cutter corporate playground

thats subjective
in some regard, austin has certainly gotten worse
many people who moved there 10 years ago are now leaving

but the problem is that unless you provide that economic opportunity and build the top-level of your city's economy (while pushing the underclass away), those structural issues will never be solved (and likely get worse as the stagnant/backwards economy will cause companies to leave)
how else can you ever get the underclass to leave or at least re-set the population so that if it doesn't leave, it has little impact on your economy and political system? this is part of the bigger issue why LA is doomed as a state. we have catered to the underclass so much that they basically rule by the mob and prevent any real development

I mean, New Orleans was hit by the worst US natural disaster, and was about to be left for dead...but sure, Austin got it in population growth dawg!!

FWIW - I think Austin may be number 11. San Antonio is top 10 though for city proper...still bigger than Dallas proper.

Austin's downtown pales in comparison to NOLA's and it's three times as big in population.
Sixth street and rainey st. are okay. Frenchmen, oak st, freret, St. Charles, St. Claude, magazine, etc are better

Could include our crime cameras around the city, since when they break they are seldom repaired.
But our traffic cameras are maintained with utmost efficiency, particularly our new "innovative" mobile traffic cameras, and they are making a mint off of them.
They are supposed to put up "warning" signs that announce the presence of the mobile cameras in the area.
But they just put one up on that merge just beyond UNO where Leon Simon merges with Robert E. Lee right before you hit the intersection of Paris Avenue and REL.
If you're approaching the merge from Leon Simon, the "warning" sign is on your left up in the air nestled among the trees. The way it's positioned, it's going to be missed by a whole lot of people, which means more money for Mitch and his merry gang of brigands.

In fairness, before 2010, Nola hasn't seen a population increase for like 50 years.

yeah the population of like the 70s was posted earlier and it was way higher than it is now
