Anyone with experience have suggestions? I want one with a waterproof base so I can search in ~2 ft of water like at the beach or in creeks/streams.

One I'm looking at on Amazon

Make sure to buy long white socks to wear with your sandals while you're at it.

Most Metal detectors don’t work well in sandy conditions. They give off false readings.

That’s a lower tier metal detector, but you have to start somewhere. Also, the control box is the only real thing that you have to worry about getting wet.

Your odds of finding pirate treasure aren't nearly as good as the ads would have you believe.

Meh, ballers use ground penetrating radar.

Spend a little more and get something like a Garrett Ace 250. That’s an entry level detector but Garrett is a great company and a good choice for a beginner. You should be fine getting the coil wet but 2’ could bring other problems like how are you going to retrieve what you find?

You’ll also want to get a pair of over the ear headphones.

I have a White’s and have found plenty of cool stuff. The other day, I helped the neighbors find their daughter’s (no pics) ring in the yard.

Agree...

As a bomb tech that has spent decades looking for subsurface objects, White's is the preferred civilian hand-held detector.

At an undisclosed location in SW Asia, we were needing to locate a buried 6-inch steel pipe, eventually, we enlisted the help of EOD, found out their equipment is not near as good as what you see on TV.

Could have been the military equipment (crap) or the military EOD team (not all are equal).

After seperation from service, most of the EOD Techs I know gravitate to White's for non-ferrous and Schonstedt for ferrous.

I bought one a few years ago because I thought it would be fun finding buried treasures and historic artifacts. Got a Bounty Hunter TK4 after much research. Waste of money. Five years in all I’ve found is a couple of recent pennies, more can tops than I can count, a few roofing nails, and a cheap ring. I’ve gone through several rural properties, my yard in NOLA, and the beach east of Destin.

I’d gladly give you mine. It’s a dumb hobby that’s terrible for your posture and spine.

A hunting buddy dropped his Desert Eagle in the trenasse one morning. Went back with a detector and found it easily.

Hmm. You know most all types of eagles can fly. And they are not metal.

I have a coworker that's been metal detecting for close to 40 years. He's used all different brands of detectors and his 2 favorite are White's and Garrett. I have since gotten a detector and I bought a Garrett 400. Its a great mid-level detector that's easy to use. I bought mine in a bundle and it came with a water resistant head to detect in shallow water. Also came with a hand held detector and other various goodies.

Also my coworker told me for best results to go to old school yards and detect. He was right, first time I went I came home with 2 pockets full of change and several silver coins and I didn't even get to 2/3 of the school yard. I live in a a rural area and all the school properties are around 100 years old. I've still got about 4 more old schools to go to.

Bounty Hunters aren't really good. You get what you pay for. I have a White's MXT and it is freaking awesome.

I can't think of a worse person that buys a metal detector and actively goes out and seeks to pocket other people's lost items.
