I can't think of a worse person that buys a metal detector and actively goes out and seeks to pocket other people's lost items.
Part of the fun is trying to find the owner of a found item like a class ring or a wedding band with an inscription. I like to search in old yards with the understanding that the owner gets to keep anything I find. I donated my best find related to Louisiana before it became a state to a state archeologist and that item was worth $1,000s at auction. I also found a unique item from the Higgins Boat company that I will donate to the D-Day Museum the next time I’m in N.O.
I’ve learned a lot about local history because of the hobby. It’s like fishing or hunting in a lot of ways, too.

Make sure you read up on your laws if you go metal detecting... you cant just go and start digging up shite on people's land

Thanks for all the replies. I know very little about metal detectors but I’ve always been interested.
I’ll start with these
Garrett Ace 250
Garrett 400
White’s MXT
Schonstedt
and see where they lead me.

Could have been the military equipment (crap) or the military EOD team (not all are equal).
After seperation from service, most of the EOD Techs I know gravitate to White's for non-ferrous and Schonstedt for ferrous.
True and the team probably didn't have much real interest in the project. I learned al about how EOD really works through.

Tulane,
Hit me up at Flyfishinn at the gmail if your serious. My Dad has been wanting one and for the right price I may be interested.

Yeah... most teams stay proficient on their assigned primary mission at the time. For instance, CBRN teams won't be as good as a MCM teams with the instruments. Plus, the nature of the project (like you mentioned, finding a pipe) really wouldn't interest folks that like to blow shite up.
Branch of service is a factor as well.

I could get lost for hours on YouTube watching people find old shite in rivers.

White’s MXT
Probably one of the easiest of all to use. And its range is pretty damn good. I've been using one for 10+ years and it has never disappointed me. Easily tuned for maximum depth and very light weight.
The thing to remember, the readouts aren't always right. With time, you will learn it. I've found at least a 5 gallon bucket full of civil bullets. Buttons, belt buckles, etc. Take the time to learn the machine and it won't let you down. Some of my finds:
