Shrinking budgets? Seriously? We fund schools more now today than ever before in human history. How we allocate the money is the problem.

Poor parenting is the answer.

LA spends more than the national average which is >12k per student per year. poor spending habits may be an issue, but I can't imagine things would improve just by increasing budgets. many, many private schools operate just fine with a similar budget

The #1 issue is bad parenting. You would be surprised (or maybe not) how many parents try to defend their kids bad behavior - blaming the teachers.

I think it mostly comes down to parenting. I will say that I’ve never heard a teacher say “the problem is us”…maybe a little introspection and self awareness would help educators.

I can only speak to what is happening around me. Budgets being reduced in favor of school vouchers for private schools.

I don't understand what God has to do with a quality education. That's pretty absurd to me. They can co-exist of course and I am happy to raise my kids as Christians with that moral guideline, but they aren't dependent on each other.

The answer is shitty parenting.

1. I don't know how much difference that makes. We didn't have much mention of God in my classroom 20 years ago. But I did go to school with alot of churchgoers. Maybe just having being taught good morals and being taught respect at home is missing here.

2. Agree, kids need to fear and respect their elders.

3. Completely agree.

I'll add that the lack of homework my child receives drastically hurts him. I've requested the teachers assign some and send his graded work home and I was treated as being difficult to deal with. He's in 8th grade and hasn't had homework regularly since 3rd or 4th. They just stick him on a computer all day.

I don't know if this is due to changes in curriculum, teachers being lazy, or parents complaining about kids having too much homework. But I've had to start assigning him math to do cause his lack of practice is making him get rusty and forget simple stuff.

Lol, so this happened when? this year?

And this is the reason education was bad 10 years ago or is this symptom of the education being bad?

So their budgets are decreasing because they are teaching fewer students?

Make sense. What is the issue? You are aware that schools are budgeted based on enrollment, correct?

I bet if you were to drill down into the data, funding would have some correlation with education levels.

Id love to do this, in my school we werent given ipads and computers, but in a city like chicgo they were.

I bet those kids are getting way more funding than i did. Diff is we didnt destroy and steal the shite we were provided.

To add to the whole cell phone theory, I believe that everything that’s popular on the phones (tik tok, YouTube, social media, etc) have completely ruined kids’ attention spans. You can’t hold their attention for more than a minute and a half before they lose interest. I see it in all ages, from 5-55. It’s crazy

Where has there been “increasing academic expectations”?

Perhaps I should have said academic standards instead of expectations

Been teaching 28 years, and high school standards have crept their way down to as early as 4th grade.

I’m trying to teach 7th graders the same concepts my kids learned in dual enrollment high schoool math classes.

Public or private

I've only taught public, but I have two relatives that teach in private schools and there is a difference because when mom and dad have to pay for it, they tend to be more involved.

I totally agree with those that say education starts at home, but as a school system, we shouldn't lower our standards because we are only making the problem worse. Parents need to be held accountable, but they're not and never will be made to shoulder the blame because teachers are an easier target!

.

You seem to be brain dead.

If I was in kindergarten 10 years ago, im still in school today.

Yesterday's students are still today's students.

They had the article out that kids in the sandy hook shooting are graduating high school. Guess what? Some of them will continue to be students.
