You're doing your first 50k run tomorrow and you're just now asking for tips? And from the OT?

ok good

a 50k isn't that much of a step up from a marathon, but trail races are a different animal than road races

I prefer the held water bottles, but some people like the camel backs, that is just personal preference though

drink a lot and be sure to fill up at each, do not skip this

I have been using mainly the goo packets during my training, but I crave something salty all the time.

have you tried salt tablets? they will probably have food at the aid stations, I'd suggest eating something solid besides just goos

you are on the trail so you don't have to worry about waiting in line for a porta potty line in road races if you have stomach issues later

I wish. I much prefer the heat.

It's at 7,000 ft, and it'll be cold and wet. High of 62 with 50% chance of thunderstorms.

A guy at works has been suggesting these to me. I picked some up today, just in case.

Do you think I should only carry my water if I eat at each aid station? There will be an aid station at mile 8, 14, and 22. I really don't want to have things in my pockets. I have a small pack just in case too.

I'd definitely carry gus if that is what you have been training with

your hand held water bottle straps don't have a pocket? that is what I have always stored my gus in

Damn, no. I might stop at this running store on my way out and see if I can find something like that.

No one mentioned that to me.

this is what I have and I can fit about 3-4 gus in that pocket on the side

I always change the water bottle for something larger though

I'm not a long distance runner... more like 5k-10k.. but I find I get a lot less leg fatigue on trails than on roads. I could never see myself running a marathon but I can't completely rule out a longer trail race.

I've done a couple of these, and usually aid stations will have some sort of food to eat. What I've found that works for me are grapes. Green ones. I know you can't carry these but hopefully the stops will have some. The races I've done, along with Pikes Peak Ascent/marathon have long tables set up with all kinds of salty/sweet/acidic that you can graze on as you water up. Like Salmon says, do not skip these, take a break, and hydrate, fill up and regroup. Also, someone else said lube up. Do it. I used regular Vaseline to avoid mucho crotch pain. Sometimes ran without a shirt to avoid shredded nipples. Nothing really ever helped me there except regular band aids.

Good luck, don't kill your self and enjoy. Seriously, enjoy the event. Hell of an accomplishment.

Almost forgot....careful with the salt tabs, those could seriously frick up your gut...

Ahhh I see, thanks. I should be able to find that. I can probably switch out the water bottle too and use mine with the strap. Perfect, this one tip was worth the thread, along with your other words of encouragement.

Thanks, Salmon.

50k is the shortest ultra marathon

after this you have to step up to 50 milers, 100k, and 100 milers and beyond

Ok, there is the 100 going on today and tonight so aid stations might be picked over by the you get out on the course. I have been burned in the past by thinking that I could get something I need at the aid station so I always carry the minimum amount of gels to get me through. If they have what you need then great, if not the you can get by with what you are carrying and some combo of what they do have.

Awesome, thanks for the last minute advice.

Yeah, I had picked some up, but I have heard this as well. I don't think I am going to mess with them on race day since I never had a chance to train with them.

That's the plan, but that'll be a thread for another day

We can discuss how you train for 50+ mile races.

Get a UD vest, they come with two handhelds and plenty of room to carry everything you need. They are also very light and breathable.
