Anyone can climb with a little bit of luck and some training. You said it. Used to be for serious world renowned climbers. Now a sherpa with a 39 year life span takes you up and back with a bunch of oxygen. Not saying it isn't tough, but the fact that just about anyone can do it if they have the money has really diminished it.

Mt. Everest isn't the largest mountain. It's neither the tallest. It's the highest place on Earth.

OP was trolling. Wanted this to go on for months but he couldn't even get it out the gate. Maybe he'll create a new alter in a few weeks and start one about swimming across the gulf of mexico

The first person over 50 to summit the 7 largest mountains in the world. Everest is the last hurdle.

If it's so easy to climb Everest, then it should be fairly easy to get all of the corpses off of the mountain too.

As of February 2014, the final 2013 numbers on the Himalayan Database showed that 658 climbers made the summit. There were 539 from the south and 119 from the north side. 9 did not use supplemental oxygen and there were 8 confirmed deaths.

This brings the total summits to be around 6,871 by 4,042 different climbers, meaning that 2,829 climbers, mostly Sherpa, have multiple summits. The south side (Nepal) remains more popular with 4,416 summits while the north (Tibet) has 2,455 summits.

Overall 248 people (161 westerners and 87 Sherpas) have died on Everest from 1921 to 2013, 140 on the Nepal side and 108 from Tibet. Since 1990, the deaths as a percentage of summits have dropped to 3.6% due to better gear, weather forecasting and more people climbing with commercial operations. Annapurna is the deadliest 8000 meter mountain with a summit to death ratio of 2:1 deaths for every summit (109:55).

That's a great graph. It doesn't show 2014 or 2015... 2014 saw the lowest total in decades due to the avalanche that shut it down. 2015... none due to the earthquake. 650 happened once in 2013. I wouldn't call that "normal" or "happening each year"

The OP is clearly trolling.

Everest is certainly easier compared with even 20 years ago but is still definitely not trivial. Yes, you get lots of help but every one of the climbers has a solid and skilled climbing resume. Beginners aren't allowed. What has happened is that you don't have to be a pure pro to climb Everest, but you do have to be a skilled and serious amateur and with enough money to hire lots of pros to help you.

But in January? Uh, no. Anyone who would even seriously consider that wouldn't be posting about it on a LSU board, they'd be posting on professional websites raising money. No guiding services climb Everest that time of year. You'd have a hard time getting Sherpa support.

Actually, what it doesn't show is

quote:

Less than half that get to the point of reaching camp IV in hopes of a summit

Unless you're referring to the few times in a decade you could claim that was true.

Not trying to minimize any of your future accomplishments, but on a single day in 2012, 234 people reached the summit, so it's not impossible.
