If your company makes working from home permanent, would you move somewhere else?

I work for a giant Fortune 20 retailer, and our HQ office is so massive and crowded that we basically have no plan to re-enter anytime soon. There have been talks among our officers that some departments may transition to permanent working from home.
If that's the case, I might consider moving from ATL to Charlotte for a variety of reasons.
Have any of you baws thought about escaping Louisiana or wherever you live if this is the case for your job? I wonder if there would be any stipulations regarding salary and whatnot.

Absolutely. I'd move to a smallest, nicest town I could find that still had fiber optics for internet.

Definitely.
I love Texas but not Houston. I'd be Hill Country bound with a quickness.

No plans on leaving my current area

Yes. But I wouldn't move farther out of Chicago. I'd move to the far outskirts of Houston or San Antonio.
As much as I love this city, the politics here are batshit.

I've been considering quitting my job and moving in the next year or two anyway. That would probably only hasten my decision.

It's a calculated risk, that's for sure.
At any point, things could swing back the other way and you'd potentially be out of a job. It only takes one leadership change.
You could pick an area that offered other opportunities to minimize the risk.

We are work from home at my job until March and there is a war right now between HR and high level employees over this.
HR says no, you have to stay where your location is based. I.E. if your office is in Denver you have to stay in Denver. But higher ups in the company like VPs are saying frick that, if we are remote we should be able to work where we want. My VP is defying HR and living at his lakehouse in Indiana right now.
What drives people crazy is HR is saying you have to stay put, but people don't know what that encompasses. Is there a certain radius you have to stay within? HR won't clarify.
It's not actually being enforced, and something tells me HR is just doing it to scare people so there aren't hordes of people moving which could create a mess once we get back to work. I have employees of my own who are living at home hours away from our home site.

I have thought about this a bit lately...I may move back to Louisiana.

Yes, but not until my kids finish school. They both love their school and friends and it's just not a good time to uproot them and put them in a new environment.

Yeah, I wouldn't move to rural Wyoming or anything. I'd pick somewhere that had local opportunities in my field as well.

You’re asking if I would live somewhere other than Baton Rouge if my work was 100% remote only requiring a decent internet connection and a little privacy?
Yeah, literally everyone would live in one of about 4 different places:
Beach
Mountain chalet
Big urban inner city with close access to nightlife and restaurants
Rural homestead/hunting/fishing camp surrounded by family
As for me, I would spend a lot of time traveling.

Yes, but there’s no chance since I can’t work from home in any case.
We’ve talked about selling everything, quitting our jobs for a year, buying an RV and traveling the country. Kid can do school 100% remote if we so choose.

I think that a lot of companies are starting to see, While most people are working from home, that there are some jobs to where people do not have to report to the office. They will view these positions expendable and will move them overseas. My company has started doing this with payroll and some HR jobs and changes will take affect next week. Depending on your job and level of importance, don’t be so excited about working from home.
Back in April and early May they stressed the importance of us working from home as much as possible because they didn’t want managers catching Covid. For 2 weeks I worked from home 1 day a week and the rest of the week I spent almost zero time in the market until I was board out of my mind. When I got back in the market it was mass chaos everywhere. The team knew I wasn’t around as much and took advantage of the freedom. I said never again unless it’s an all day zoom call which we do every 4 weeks.

There are some tech companies threatening to reduce compensation in Silicon Valley if you move somewhere else because their pay is based on the cost of living in the surrounding Bay Area. If employees move to a place with lower CoL, they have to inform HR and "severe consequences will be had" if you're not honest about your location.
