I automatically assume this whenever I see a chick with a bellybutton piercing. It doesn't matter how old she is either... It's just an automatic assumption.

Maybe I need to work on that.

I think it can just be a form of self expression without some implied sexual angle.

If my 15 year old daughter wants her belly button pierced it means I've failed as a parent

Unfortunately, the expression is usually "pay attention down here".

frick no. Be a father not a friend. Because you had to ask, there is your answer. She has plenty of time when she is an adult to do things. She's young an needs confidence, piercings are not the answer. Tell me how you think the boys will see it if it's under her shirt........you get it now? It won't be under, lok

Since some piercings can have some kind of shiny stud I can see it being a method to get guys to look at their stomach area since people are attracted to shiny objects

frick yeah that's OK. You've got lots to worry about later on but this isn't one of them IMO . I have three daughters two have belly piercings with no repercussions. Live on.

That's definitely true, but that's not what the guys that are looking at her are thinking. They're thinking it's sexual.

I don't want anyone thinking sexual thoughts about my would be 15 year old daughter or little sister.

This is why I'm never planning on having kids. I'd kill someone.

Nope. No body mods until the kid is 18 and she can pay for it/get it done herself.

Disagree. If she is afraid to even ask you to discuss it with her bc she already knows the answer you've failed. Or if she goes and gets it anyway without you knowing and hides it from you, you've failed. Being open minded, trusting her, and her knowing that you know that a simple piercing doesn't define her values/character is a good thing.

She can handle herself. If a guy has anything disrespectful to say to her he will not be prepared for what she has to say in return. And she has 3 very protective older brothers .

I don't disagree here. But she also needs to know the ramifications of deciding to get it done. She needs to know that there is a huge portion of people who will be thinking negative thoughts about her.

She needs to know that there will be people who assume lots of negative things about her.

She needs to know that there will be a lot of guys automatically assuming and thinking really disgusting things about her.

Once she knows all of that, and she still wants to do it - then I'd feel like a failure as a parent.

It's a lot more popular now than it was in 1998. Back in 1998 you were being kind of a rebel by getting it done most of the time.

Today, you have to get one to fit in with your friends.

It's obvious that she wants to call attention to her midsection/stomach.

Why else do that if it isn't provocative in nature?

It is meant to draw attention to her body.

For a 15 yr old kid, that's kind of big deal IMO.
