You may be right. I thought about this after the 60 Minutes segment last night (I assume you did too)

I have not done anything wrong as of TODAY, but ....WTF? I have no idea what tomorrow holds.

Why make it easier for them? Just so you can find your 3rd fricking cousin?

What was the gist of it? Saw the commercial for it, but didnt watch it.

I told my ex that no I dont want to know enough to give my dna or info to some company to collect. Especially after I heard that the mormon church owns one of the ancestry ones, and has the laregest collection of family trees in the world. Also, when that serial killer got busted by his dna being online for cops to easily test. I'm a normal guy that doesnt do anything wring but nvr know what the future holds, and dont want something stupid like this to come vack to bite me in the butt.

They can find out it’s you even if you didn’t upload your DNA but one of your relatives did.

When you upload your DNA, it shows the closest matches of people to you who also uploaded their DNA. So you will get a list of cousins you never knew you had and the percentage match of their DNA.

So if the cops upload your DNA, they can still figure out the DNA belongs to you because it matches with some random relative like a second cousin once removed.

Except he didn’t have his DNA online. Some of his relatives did. When the cops found the relatives, they were the able to narrow down the pool of suspects significantly.

And from there they did a traditional investigation to find the most logical suspects, and were able to pinpoint the killer.

So you can be found through DNA even if you haven’t uploaded your own DNA. You can be found through relatives who uploaded theirs.

And dumbass cops would never know unless you do

First of all, don't break the law and kill people. That's pretty simple.

Second, the GSK was caught because of familiar DNA which the results were then uploaded from the testing site to a 3rd party site. People do this because they want to know more about their DNA connections and not be limited to one site like Ancestry.com or 23andMe. The sites that offer DNA testing for personal use supposedly protect your data by anonymizing it and only releasing it to the authorities under subpoena.

Now if you upload your data to a 3rd party site and identify yourself, you lose that anonymous protection and your data is free for anyone to review. So yes, while SOME websites allow the authorities to access DNA data, the big players do not unless a subpoena is presented to them.

IMO once Ancestry and 23andMe get hacked and personal information is put up on the Dark Web, that's when users should be concerned.

some just want to know their heritage.

I still think it’s dumb to upload that information to a company that is likely to just sell it to a third party down the line.

I love when people argue that they don't want their DNA submission to lead to family members being arrested.

Well, they aren't looking for unpaid parking tickets through DNA. If your family member is arrested from this, they raped or murdered someone and you should probably want them arrested

DNA is fake science that aclu lawyers use to let criminals out of jail. Cops are even starting to use it so they don’t have to do good old fashioned police work

Agree with the OP

Why would you PAY a website to take your DNA?

They should pay you.

Stolen from the creepy story thread, but shite like this would be a good candidate for crowd sourcing DNA.

Three infant corpses found in house crawl space and they can't identify who they are.

I don't think that it's just killing people kinda thing. I believe guys are out there that are worried about children being theirs right? I read about one guy saying he found out he had a child from one of these sites. That could wreck a marriage.
