We just found out today that our 10 (almost 11) year old lab mix has a large liver mass. Due to where ultrasound is showing it to be located...most of the liver is affected and doesn't look like something that could be surgically removed.

Besides bloody diarrhea(this is what prompted us to take him in today) he is otherwise acting his usual self right now. Eating well, drinking well, wants to play fetch non stop. So basically we let him live his life until his quality of life deteriorates to where putting him down would be the most compassionate option.

So while he still is his normal self...I want his last days to be full of things he loves.

I'm already thinking of seeing if one of my friends that has a pool will let my husband and I bring him over for one last swim. We don't have a pool but he has always LOVED the water and the most joy I ever saw on his face was the first time he got to play in the ocean and run on the beach.

Just wondering what others would do in my situation.

Give him lots of cheese -- dogs love cheese.

Otherwise just make him comfortable and spend quality time with him. Take photos.

Can you get him to a beach? Also cannabis might help with the pain / state of mind. Dogs like to hide pain from owners. Usually comes in the form of shaking.

Putting your loved one down is one of the toughest thing to do in life. Sorry to hear about the diagnosis. Golf cart rides are great when it gets towards the end.

Sorry for your dogs diagnosis. Obviously you are already considering the compassionate but difficult choice. Wish you the best.

My husband went on a solo camping trip last week and brought Payson(name of our dog) with him. We thought the bloody diarrhea was something he ate out in the woods(and it could be). He at first debated on whether or not to bring him. Now that we know what we know...I'm really glad he brought him and got to have that one last camping trip with him.

I love Payson as well..but he is clearly my husband's dog and he is the first dog he has had since he was a kid.

I'm sorry, Nurse.

Just play and snuggle with him as much as possible.

Give him a good steak for dinner.

I happened to stop at the store and found lamb chops on special. Bought a pack and cooked them up, and gave them to him throughout the day.

I'd just love it like I usually do. Maybe not worry what he/she is eating or how many treats it's had.

He has lost weight and had a finicky appetite the past several months. But we just had a full physical on him with lab work 2 months ago and the vet didn't see anything(course they didn't do xrays...but nothing would have given them reason to do them then). Vet had suggested we change up his food and add chicken/rice to it. Which we did and he started eating better and gaining some weight back. We also have been giving him CBD oil to increase his appetite so we will def continue the CBD oil.

Apparently...they think he may have had this mass for a while and it's just continued to get bigger...it was just under his ribs so wouldn't have been felt if they were feeling his abdomen on exam.
