Ive always heard to put them on the front for steering control, but the guy at the tire shop told me the new ones should go on the back for traction.
The vehicle I just bought only needed two tires on the front, the rear ones were ok
ETA Ford F-150

Depends on front or rear wheel drive.
Eta...you must have a rear wheel drive vehicle...or at least that's the predominant way it's driven.

New tires to the drive wheels.

It is a point of contention across the auto industry. I have had blowouts on both the front and rear. On my trucks, new ones always go on the rear.
It is much easier to control a vehicle with a front blowout than a rear blowout

On pavement, tread is for water displacement. Not as much for "grip" in the traditional sense you think of grip. I've always been told front as that will be more important for control on wet roads when hyrdroplaning is an issue.

Two on the front, front moved to the back. Front should be more worn because more weight.

You're correct about water displacement. However, if you have less tread on the back of your rear wheel drive vehicle when going around a curve, you're more likely to fishtail. Most tire shops have a poster on the wall showing/explaining this.
If your car is front wheel drive, then you put them on the front.

I was told to put the 2 new ones on the rear.

I was always told new tires go on the front because you steer with those tires and the majority of braking is done with those tires. Thus, the sudden loss of one of them would be a higher risk of losing control than otherwise.

My BIL flipped his truck on the interstate with a driver side front blowout

If you are replacing the front tires because they're worn, why would you move the worn front tires to the rear?

Why can't you afford 4 whole tires? Are these made by Yeti?

Stop being poor and buy 4 new tires that match

Obviously, the Truck Nuts wear down the drivers(left) side more.
