Glad they’re going to yall and hopefully not to us anymore.
I’m in VA and people are sick of data centers. They suck up 40% of the states power!
I would love to throw this yoke off and dump it on North LA.

Again They are putting 3 gas turbine generators on site.
The cost of that will be passed on to the locals via higher energy costs. Virginia says hello. We are fighting these things like hell now. People are really getting fed up with them.

And of course there will be permanent jobs related to this. You have to keep all that infrastructure up and running. You have to keep those computers working. You have to feed all those people. You have to remove their waste. You have to do their taxes. You have to feed them
LOL, no. There will be some permanent jobs, but most of it will be remotely done out of India, Mexico, or Eastern Europe. Many of the specialty trades used in data centers (electricians, generator maintainers, etc.) are contracted, and they show up when required, but will not be Meta employees, they'll work for Schneider or similar.
The people you need on site are a skeleton crew (yes, I realize for a data center that size it's not going to be 15 people, but it's not going to be hundreds like most of you expect.) This crew will pull cable, rack servers, and do stuff that has to be physically done. Everything else will be logically controlled, if not from Palo Alto, from overseas. You don't need a DBA onsite, they can work just fine from India, especially since non emergency IT maintenance will be done outside of US working hours.

I don’t see how.
Why would a business with a power plant on site increase prices for people not served by said power plant?

Data centers are the new version of turning farmland into solar panel fields. Like solar panel fields people will soon enough be asking how do we get rid of these monstrosities.

To be fair, the footprint of this thing's ecological impact also has to include the miles of solar panel farms covering the area around there to help offset it's 'carbon score'. So it's many times worse than you can imagine.

Got a feeling Trump's $100K per H1B is going to get expanded to offshoring help if you're right. Then poof! The whole model evaporates at the stroke of a pen.

Dude, the tech is going to evolve so fast if this thing is running in ten years I'll be amazed. It's going to shrink, just like every other tech thing has. But for now, this is how we have to do it to race to singularity and hopefully not be second there. This isn't about getting recipes based on a photo of your pantry. This is about the future of mankind and who's ideas are going to win.
All that infrastructure gets left behind once that happens by the way. That's both good and bad.

NELA about to be invaded by Indians.

Supposedly it’ll use as much power as it takes to run New York City. New York City has more residents than our whole state!
It’s not supposed. It will. There was an interview that Fresno State University live aired about 2-3 years ago of the former CEO of Amazon (I believe that’s correct). Within 15 minutes of airing they took it down for some unknown reason.
Basically, he kinda blew the lid off this whole thing. Said the world only has enough power to run about 60% of all the AI capability we currently have (3 years ago). Just one of these facilities needs as much power as it takes to run a city of over 250,000 people.
Oh, and NELA isn’t the only place they’re building. There’s one going up next to River Bend nuclear plant. At the same time, Entergy is building another steam powered plant across the Mississippi from St. Gabriel.
About 3 months ago, River Bend had a TFR (temporary flight restriction) over it. Word is, they had a “drone problem”…….

With these data centers built, they should have their own power infrastructure. Because its going to raise the rates of citizens all around.
Most poignant thought in this thread.

Go find a bulldozer and excavator working about a quarter to a half mile from the road. Multiply that by 200. That’s what you see

I passed the LNG plant when they were building it down towards Venice. I swear every trackhoe in the southern US must’ve been out there. I counted hundreds just passing by.

Yeah this is something much, much larger than we're being told. This is civilizations moving heaven and earth towards a goal as fast as they can.
We're there.
Almost.
Guess we'll find out.
