Lexus or Acura for the reliability. Audi if I felt like overpaying. Not really a fan of the Volvo or Acura offerings though.

Actually, I think the Volvo is the best looking one in that group. The interior is clean as hell.
But, that doesn't outweigh the horrible build quality.

He'll need it case of the apocalypse, natural disasters, or a race war. I won't buy anything without 4x4 for that reason. The wife and I both have 4x4.
