Most won't have heard of him but Fritz Wunderlich. Probably the best German tenor ever recorded. At 35, he died after tripping on his untied shoelaces and falling down the stairs. Died in 1966, just before DG really started to take off so good recordings are limited.
His voice was wonderful- completely unlike the stereotype people have of operatic tenors

Otis Redding would be up there

I would love to see what Jimi or Janice could have done over the last 50 years.

Burton was a tragedy, but good lord you can’t put a bassist at the top this list!
I’ll go with Rhoads.
I’ll go with Rhoads.

Biggie. With him continuing his career, the landscape of best rapper ever is down to only 1. Jay Zs ascent to there never happens

Stevie Ray Vaughan
He died just as he was getting clean and beating his demons. He was already one of the best guitar players but he was on an upward trajectory when he died. No telling what he could've accomplished.

Otis Redding. I was shocked when I first found out he died so young. He made such good music and achieved so much in such a small amount of time. I thought for sure he died at a “normal age”. Runner up: Jimi Hendrix.

Lots of possible answers, but I’m going with Jim Morrison. Despite all their issues, the Doors were a creative powerhouse. Lyrically and musically they always did something different and new.
Oh, and to the person who said Kurt Cobain was overrated… For a very short period of time, Nirvana was the biggest act in music. Not just rock music. Music. They almost-single-handedly ended 80’s metal.

Tupac and I am no fan of rap. And no one has convinced me that he is actually dead. Prolly chillin' with Elvis on an island near Gilligan's.

Buddy Holly or Richie Valens
