I like Ketchum/Sun Valley a lot but there isn’t anything around there once you leave town.
I like Boise a lot but the summers are hotter than I expected. With Boise you have an airport that can get you lots of places, great infrastructure, two colleges, and lots of medical options. It’s got a great downtown and is very affordable.
I like a small city vibe but accessibility to the rest of the world is important. Access to healthcare is also very important as you get older.

Blue Ridge GA or one of the surrounding towns near it like Blairesville or Ellijay. My husband & I visited for the first time this summer & fell in love with the area. We’re taking our daughters back at Thanksgiving. Depending on where they end up after college, I could definitely see us retiring to that area.

I think a lot of folks have or are considering moving there these days. Seems legit and property is cheap relatively

Coeur D'Lane has become over commericalized with California money. Stunning natural beauty though for sure.

Ellijay and Blairsville are truly God's country. You can actually afford a retirement house there. At least for now. Wife and I are moving there in 2026 when we are both retired

If you are talking now worries about cost of living, etc. I would say Maui. But I could never pass for a local so I'd probably be hated.

Haines, Ak.

Already planning the move, scoping property.

Its heaven. One of the last real small towns with all local services. Outdoor Nirvana.

Anacortes, WA

I worked there for 8 months in 2005 and I wouldn't mind being able to explore there a little longer.

I would pick North Carolina
It's been the nicest place I've lived. I'm on Lake Norman

Weather is pretty great about 7-8 months of the year and def tolerable the rest. Economy is strong and growing. People are mostly pretty friendly. Mountains 90 minutes away, beach 3 hours.

Now stay out

Same boat and moved to NC recently. It’s great but missing something I can’t put my finger on. I’ve met a few other folks from Louisiana here and they complain about lack of culture. I guess you get used to all the colorful personalities from back home.
There are a lot of transplants here so there's not a super predominant culture

That's one thing I miss about LA. Not a lot of people move there or leave

We've worked to create a fun community though. I host a crawfish boil at my house every spring now that gets bigger every year

Small towns in North Carolina still have a lot of the culture that's been there for a hundred years.

NC have the best small towns and downtowns of just about any state I've been in. They're truly beautiful, charming, and unique...especially toward the western part ie Boone, Blowing Rock, etc

Moving to Anderson, SC next spring when our house is finished being built. Have a daughter in Greenville and one in Charleston. Will be nice to be closer to both of them.

If I could afford to live in Jackson, Wyoming I would love to be there.
