Median pay in tech jobs:

All the more reason for public schools to teach computer science so that underserved populations have a chance at these jobs.

College is mostly a waste of time for IT jobs. I say that as someone that went to college and has worked in IT for 23-24 years. It's really not necessary as I'm sure is the case for many other professions as well.

“Computer science” is just applied math to computers. You’re really working on theoretical issues and, if you go to grad school, you’re essentially working on mathematical theorems.

If you want programming skills, you can pick those up in many other ways. I did through a biology degree. Mike Judge (the filmmaker) had a physics degree and worked on the computer systems for the F-18 out of college.

Most companies don't give 2 shits about certifications unless you are in network or security.

I don't even look at them on a resume. I have 5 Microsoft certifications and it was basically here's the prep test, the actual test was the same questions. Doesn't mean shite.

THIS.

Looking back, I would have been better off going to a 2yr technical college and then jumping into the workforce to get experience rather than do 4.5 yrs of college.

People either have the right aptitude for it or they don't. A couple of the smartest developers I've worked with in my career were college dropouts

I’ve been working tech for about 30 years and those median numbers might be a reality in San Fran, maybe NYC, but nowhere close anywhere else.

If I had been making any of those numbers for any period of 10 years in my career, I’d be retired.

I generally hire people on my team with 7+ years of experience in IT but them having a college degree or not to me is irrelevant.

You understand that everyone can't do computer science or have a tech job, right?
