I have seen flaming deer heads with crosses, 'In memory' tattoos to someone's dad, and assorted other bad ink blobs.

I think it's cooler to not have tattoos now. I've never gotten one and don't plan on it. When I was growing up only bikers, military, prisoners, and badasses had tattoos. Now every little hipster, cross fitter, man, woman, child, and nun have tattoos. It's played out and has no meaning anymore. It used to be for rebels now it's just the thing to do.
