They almost lost it in '73.

Thanks for the link. I go to the area often. During the 2011 flood it was something to see if you understood what you were looking at.

4 billion in 1976 USD.
MR from BR to Bird's foot would become a saltwater estuary. Goodbye Morgan city.
That's a very concise and accurate summary! All that's missing is the death toll.

I took a disaster management class with an instructor who was big into the impact of river control. A few of us went on a field trip to tour the structure, including an elevator ride to the bottom of the Mississippi River. Very cool experience & interesting how much of an impact diverting the river has caused on land loss in Louisiana.

I’m not sure if tours are a regular thing, but it was super cool. And a little freaky.

So you're saying that I will be able to catch trout from da levee in baton rouge? Sign me up

The hypothetical starting on page 10 of the document is pretty chilling. Sounds like a disaster movie.

What would happen to the nuclear plant Waterford 3?

I’m not disputing what would happen if the river shifted course, but this report is from 1980. 6 years before the Auxillary Control Structure came on line plus the Hydroelectric Plant a few years after that. They both relieve pressure on the Old River Control Structure.

Have to agree here. Would like to see this updated from at least the last major flood event.
