You should have asked him how much a new air conditioner or heat pump cost or if he had a clue how much a plumber charges because some asshat renter likes to flush diapers down the septic/sewer.
I say this guy's stupidity/ignorance is proof positive why we need politicians like Nancy Pelosi - meaning - people like him are too stupid to live with government over watch.

Because the owner of the house is the one with the mortgage. I don't understand why the renter even had this thought.

Because a lot of people got very low interest rates (<3.0%), many don't even get to claim their interest deductions and just use the standard deduction. Which happens to be the same standard deduction renters get to take.
