re: If global warming is happening, why was it way hotter earlier this century?

Here’s the record high temps by decade for Lafayette, LA
Nice cherry picking. Look at the global mean dummy

No one did that. Settle the hell down.
What I did was say you were full of shite. And you were.
But, if you want to feel like I am "brainwashing" you, fine. That kind of strokes my ego that you think so highly of me.

It's not even good cherry picking, OP just doesn't understand what the data is telling him. He seems to think that more records set means the decade was hotter. It doesn't seem to register that time only moves forward.
Pretty much all of the earlier records have been broken.
An interesting tidbit, it looks like Lafayette's hottest day on record was in its coldest year on record.

Al Gore wasn't around for Global Warming 1, so he volunteered to take charge for Global Warming 2. Or maybe it was Global Warming 37, so he took Global Warming 38. These cycles get confusing, so we need politicians to keep us straight.

Solar activity is the biggest cause of temp fluctuations... outside of some sort of catastrophic event blocking out the sun...

Global warming is very much real but it isn't man made. The earth has went through warming and cooling periods throughout all of history. We just happen to be in a warming trend right now. Middle 1800's the world was in a cooling trend.
The science is all over the place, depending on who is paying for it.

I believe you measure climate in centuries not years or even decades.

Just don't tell me it's not hot AF right now.
quote:Unusual? The average daily temp for July in Lafayette is 91.4, so it’s a good bit above the average today at 98. But the record daily high for July is 107, set in 1901.
Denying that this heat is unusual pisses me off.
So it’s hotter than normal right now, big fricking deal. This past spring was the coolest I may have ever experienced. What caused that?

We aren't measuring the climate, we are measuring the average change of climates.
Keep your head stuck in the sand, it's cooler under there.

You do know you have to measure to compare, right?

Your garage doesn't have plants and trees that use carbon dioxide for photosynthesis.

Sigh. Copy and pasted from my post in another thread:

Feel free to find a July between 1970 (the glorious year of my birth) and 2020 or so that has nearly the same average max temp of 96.3 we've hit this year. Most years July temps averaged around 90 with plenty of 88-89 degree years. I can't believe people are denying that it is clearly hotter than usual this summer. Weird what people force themselves to believe.
Average max temp in BR by month
Doesn't mean Al Gore was right. But a July this hot is UNPRECEDENTED. Stop trying to deny reality.

Yes.
You do know that with enough measurements you can determine rate and direction before whatever arbitrary length of time you decide is "climate", right?
Posted on 7/29/23 at 7:51 pm to bhtigerfan
I’m afraid you are confused. If we broke 10 heat records in 1950, by reaching 95 degrees on those 10 days, and then broke 8 heat records in 2022 by reaching 100 degrees on those 8 days, 2022 would probably be the hotter year. So, the number of daily highs, while interesting, is not the metric that decides what year is hotter.

I'm sorry, guys. I've lived in Baton Rouge for 50+ years and I just don't remember weeks of 100+ degree temps in the summers growing up.

And we had a similar stretch a few weeks ago.
