I just listened to ABC news. They phrased it this way. “he was connected to the crime scene using dna technology”.

The Idaho police have said that DNA linked him to the crime in their press release. It's a few pages back in this very thread
ETA - this isn't 100% true, it was not in their actual press release. Just Fox news and CNN reporting that from sources

Online Genealogical DNA. Prolly someone in his family did a family search. That gave them connection to him.
