We're not talking about hurt feelings. We're talking about the excessive use of force that would violate the 8th Amendment. And violation of the Freedom of Information Act by denying requests for data.

Again, the only thing you'll accept as a confirmed report is an official government number. They're not keeping those publicly and they're denying FOIA requests for that information pretty regularly.

And local facilities that are keeping ICE detainees are refusing to release data (at least here in Kentucky) on tax dollars that are being spent to house with the broad regulation regarding release of detainee names/identifying information. So you'll have to excuse me if I have some healthy skepticism that the data is on the up and up when my own state Attorney General had to step in on what's being concealed.

You're asking for confirmed numbers/data but the government is making it almost impossible to obtain that. Makes it pretty easy for you to argue it doesn't exist if it isn't officially confirmed.

That still doesn’t get you where you want to go.

“The government should release the data” is perfectly reasonable. “The government hasn’t released the data, therefore my assumptions about what that data would show are probably true” isn’t.

You don’t know how many wrongful detentions there are. Neither do I. The difference is I’m not filling in the missing data with whatever conclusion happens to support my argument.

If your argument is simply that ICE and these detention facilities should be more transparent, fine. I agree.

But a lack of transparency isn’t evidence that your assumptions are correct. And jumping from that to 8th Amendment violations and ICE eventually violating the rights of American citizens is still a whole lot of speculation stacked on top of data you just admitted we don’t have.

And still not enough to stop/slow down mass deportations regardless.

And you also don’t know how many wrongful detentions and detainments there have been because of the absence of data. And as a result can’t say they’re not violating the 8th Amendment.

We can acknowledge it’s pretty fricked up that we can’t even access that data. And as a taxpayer and citizen that should bother you far more than it does.

That all said, it’s also not a big jump that a group of LEOs with very low standards for their position (even lower than local PDs) and multiple unconfirmed reports across multiple states are committing rights violations. We’re seeing pretty regularly in local PDs who have lowered standards similar violations.

Especially as they gain access to more tools like in OP that toe the line of an 8th Amendment violation just in its existence and utilization.

But as long as we foot the bill without accountability for the correctional complex, that’ll continue to be an issue.

Since most people on here are upset about the cameras that track the license plates of American citizens, because it can easily be abused, I’m sure y’all will be against this addition to a law enforcement agency as well. This can be easily abused. How is this (D)different than the license plate readers?
