They are sitting ducks in today's battlefield. We do need ships with guns larger than 5". There is currently a proposal to place Army artillery and MLRS in ships.

The larest tube artillery still is use by the army is the 155mm. The last 8” guns were phased out in the 90s with those battalions being transitioned over to the MLRS.

A ground support battleship would be awesome.

We could call it a "tank".

Those old ornery bitches as outdated as they are can in an extreme circumstance be pressed back into service. I remember talking to a naval mechanic who said they could put those old ladies into service with a 10 day notice if need be

Those old gals can take a hit though and they sure as hell can deliver one hell of a counterpunch

there's no need for it.

What real world tactic advantage does it provide?

You'd do better developing scram jet, atmospheric bombers

I meant a giant huge naval vessel that had artillery and giant guns and other capabilities for miles inland and was able to function in multiple capacities for nearby troops. Maybe serving as a forward operating base. Idk. Something along those lines.

How about we step it up and outfit aircraft carriers with battleship guns?

Imagine it, a battleship that also doubles as an aircraft carrier.

Some of the earlier carriers had 5 or 8 inch guns on them. But using them tore up the flight deck, so they dropped them.

Then build a bigger carrier with more room for the flight deck and guns.

Problem solved.

See my previous post. The military is proposing putting Army artillery and MLRS on ships at the moment.

They’ll have to scrape them off the floor of the Pacific Ocean first.

Japan has 3 or 4 helicopter carriers that are capable of carrying the new F35B’s.

I was caught
In the middle of a railroad track
I looked round
And I knew there was no turning back
My mind raced
And I thought what could I do
And I knew
There was no help, no help from you
Sound of the drums
Beating in my heart
The thunder of guns
Tore me apart
You've been
Thunderstruck

Yeah. They call them “destroyers” though.

Strangest looking “destroyer” I’ve ever seen.

The USS Alabama (BB-60) in Mobile bay is one of those "ornery bitches". I know today's military has some really impressive things but those 16" bore main guns are something to see. Firing a 2700 pound shell at 2300 FPS. And they could send it almost 20 miles.

I cannot imagine how loud they would be, and the shock wave that occurred when they were fired.

My son and I got to spend the night on her back when he was in the boy scouts. We got to sleep in the same style bunks and eat in the same cafeteria. It was pretty cool, dont know if they still do that.
