MTV played music videos all day. It was great.

The only thing bad about growing up in the 80s is that we are all getting old now.

Ah, the 80's.....nostalgia makes those days look sweet. They were not bad if you were a kid. Good Saturday morning cartoons. Garbage Pail Kids. You Can't Do That On Television. MTV played music. Cola Wars. Ugly baseball uniforms. GI Joe. The USSR. It was the last generation not to have their childhood or teenage years dominated by the Internet. It was glorious in retrospect.

I said a hip hop,
The hippie, the hippie,
To the hip, hip hop, and you don't stop, a rock it
To the bang bang boogie, say, up jump the boogie,
To the rhythm of the boogie, the beat.

Rap was about having fun and having a good time instead of ho's, thugs, and keeping it real on the streets. Maybe it was shallow, but I don't see the direction hip hop has evolved as a positive.

You're responsible for "Straight Outta Compton" getting snubbed at the Oscars.

. The rock music was cheesy

That's why during the 80's you actually had to go in search of real alternative rock.

To the OP, I was born in 1971 and the eighties were great, but there are tons of things better about today. Just start with superficial things like cars, TV, TV shows, better beer and liquor, communication even without social media, video games, equipment for various hobbies, gun rights, no nuclear USSR, rare sports team black outs, being able to look up the answer to any question you might have on your phone, etc.

This along with the internet in its infancy during our teen years is what makes us a different generation. We do not fit millennial and we do not fit Gen X.

We had cable. The cable box were these punch buttons with a dial to sync the picture. My dad would turn the porn station on and try and tune it in and kinda get a picture.

I think most people had cable by the late 80's considering my parents were hold-outs until 86. Even then, the only really entertaining scripted TV was on the big 3. Then I found that glorious channel called Music Television. They had these things called music videos.

I wonder whatever happened to that station.

I fit all of these. Graduated in 90 and downloaded grainy nudes and fricked around in AOL chat rooms in college and I'm in the dead center of Gen X. You sound like Gen X also. Do you like Reality Bites? Do you like to be left alone and consider yourself a cynic?

no nuclear USSR,

Well Russia is still a nuclear power with some of its warheads unaccounted for. Add In a nuclear Iran and a North Korea now and it's seriously debatable as to what time has a worse threat of Armageddon.

TV

HBO and MTV were GOAT during the mid to late 80s. Do you not remember the 1980's HBO Feature Presentation which played before each movie? Magic!

1983 HBO Feature Presentation

Still gives me goosebumps. And that HBO feature presentation would play before movies like The Goonies, War Games, Dragonslayer, Willow, Legend, Labyrinth, Big, Pee Wee movies, etc. Not too many things are as nostalgic as the old HBO feature presentation getting you excited for the kickass movie that followed!

In my opinion, communication thru old telephones and written letters was more magical than email, text message, social media, etc.

video games

The 80s was the GOAT decade for video games. It's the decade the biggest leaps in gaming were made. NES came out and revolutionized home gaming. Arcade Halls were still popular.

no nuclear USSR

Do you really believe Russia is no longer nuclear? LOL

I think it's clearly still a nuclear USSR at this point. That may change though. There were several mistaken near misses back then, one in which a Soviet officer probably should have launched but gambled that our "attack" was a computer error.

80s were meh. Was a kid in both and glad I had AIM and AOL chat rooms for hooking up in the 90s. Kinda sad I missed out on Tinder tbh./

Early 80s was the worst time in the history of home video gaming. 84 and on it got better. Rather be in in the early 90s during the genesis/snes war. Arcades lasted awhile into the 90s with fighting games getting big and Blitz/Jam.
