Not in any was pro government, but if it wasn’t considered taxable income people would just move a large part of their income to a huge bonus.

That is extremely fricked up. I have gotten gift cards through the years from employees and the taxes are paid when they purchase the cards for the employees. They are passing their taxes on to you. I also used to get a bonus at Christmas every year from a employer and it was a set amount of money and they covered the taxes.

Look folks, my employer gave me $700 worth of gift cards ($200 @ Thanksgiving, $500 for Xmas) and i have to repay the company back out of todays paycheck. Take for example, if i owned a company, and handed out gift cards to my employees for the holidays, then deducted it from everyone's paycheck, wouldn't that cause a rift? It's basically Indian Giving, amirte?

Not quite… $700 was added to his paystub, not check. It was added to his paystub so it would be taxed, as required by law.

You paid taxes on that. If the "set amount" was $500, they would gross it up to $610 so you received $500 after taxes.

A gift from someone is not taxed if it's less than $18,000. Your employer giving you a "bonus" is not the same. You are taxed on everything an employer gives you, whether it be cash or a gift card. In a previous job years ago I was taxed on a $25 gift card
