he held up his end of the deal. You should maybe just send him a text and say " hey man, i think $75 is a bit excessive for a 3 minute call, would you accept $40? "

It's not my equipment. I bought it brand new. No one wanted to install it because they would rather use their own vendors. Just like a mechanic would rather not install parts you supply.

So he answered the phone, told you to get a new DVR, then sent you a $75 bill??

And it wasn't even the right advice?

Yes. I know. And when troubleshooting, just replacing the equipment is off the table. That's why no one wanted to touch your job. That's why this guy wants to bill you. Its a huge pain in the arse.

This is BS... This type of fee is not understood.. Like say for a lawyer or a Dr... What would you have done if he said there is a fee for a service call over the phone?

It’s frustrating. But technically if you purchased the equipment it’s your equipment

Bill me for what though? If he came out and looked at it..sure. Hell, even if he took some effort and researched the issue and emailed me the results without coming out I would have paid.

But, for me explaining what the issue is for 2 minutes and 30 seconds and for him to tell me, "I don't know man, buy a new DVR".

What does that have to do with this dude sending him a $75 bill for a phone call

When my wife was pregnant, she went grocery shopping while I was at work, she came home and realized the light wasn't on in the refrigerator. She called me to see if it was supposed to be on and I told her yes. She said she needed to call an appliance repair tech to come look at it. I told her to see if the breaker was tripped but she said she didn't feel comfortable doing that.

She called someone we used in the past for our washer. He told her he was actually two houses down from us and he would swing by when he was done. Twenty minutes later, the dude shows up, walks to the breaker box, flips on the breaker, opens the fridge and gives her a bill for $80.

She didn't want to pay, but I told her we had no choice.

Buy some pit bulls and then tell him you need him to come over and check the equipment again

You know you are going to end up paying him so you might as well tell us what company it is.

I think your missing the point of the charge. He’s not charging you for answering the phone and telling you to buy a DVR, he’s charging you to keep you from ever calling him again.

Most folks, once they know you are capable of answering technical questions and are helpful in general, especially for free, will call nonstop every time something doesn’t look right. Not saying you’d do it but I bet 80% of the folks this guy deals with would ring his phone all day with simple questions about their gadgets.

This guy has likely been down this road before. This is also why nobody else wanted to install the stuff you purchased.

I suggest definitely paying as it wouldn’t be fun dealing with collection agency over $75.

Now where should I send invoice for my $100 consultation fee?

I work in IT. I already know that headache. I would call him just to tell him he'll never hear from me again and if he would waive that fee, but I'm worried he might double it for wasting his precious 3 minutes.

I get your point, but it doesn't stick here.

There are askholes that deserve to get charged, but telling someone "your hard drive is probably out, replace it" on a job they did a week ago doesn't deserve a $75 charge, especially without telling them. My guess it is a "you didn't buy china crap from me at 5X mark up so I am going to fee you to death" type fee.

its exactly what it is. he was the only guy who even wanted to help him and do the job. it all sticks though even though we don't like it.
