Exactly- looking for voids in the weld.
Kudos to you.

There are satellites finding your position right now. Gonna be rig trucks lined up outside your house for miles.

Made a good living and still do manipulating metal. Tracked a many of miles across this country. Make or Break test… no problem.

I’ll take them off your hands.

I’ve had welders wanting to buy my spare. I take extremely good care of them.

IF you're in NOLA, Delgado used to have welding classes.

Find 3 welders that will agree on anything welding related you have cracked the code!

Nuclear Plants, every type of coal fired boiler, chemical plants, oil refineries, NASA, pipe lines etc…
Made a killing in the Nuke industry. Whole different animal at those facilities. 1wk of welding test usually. Cut my teeth on the GoldStar 5 orbital welders, they loved those things there

Yup, you’re all position, figured as much. I didn’t have to weld pipe.
Much respect.

To OP, you can see from responses that welding is (maybe like most things) on two different levels.
I’ll differentiate by saying household or farm welding versus professional welding.
The Bama hwy poster is cream of the crop. It’s extremely difficult to weld round pipe and have it pass inspection.
You can build a bbq grill though and that’s a great first project.
I’d invite you to watch videos of pipe welding, it’s amazing.
Kudos again to hwy Bama

When you’re sweating bullets waiting on the inspector to inspect your welds, you’re a welder.
When you know most of your welds will pass but not all of them, you’re a welder.
And you know those voids are actually flux, and you grind them out and weld again, you’re a welder.

Unless you’re welding overhead. You’d like one then.
Of course but I didn’t get into that because he is a long time from ever even attempting overhead. Plus getting hit with a hot BB or a piece of hot slag will build character

This pretty much describes my welding ability.

Is this something I can teach myself to do, watching YouTube videos or whatever, or do I have to take some sort of class?
There has been a lot of thread creep but I just wanted to be clear: if you are any sort of autodidact you can absolutely teach yourself to weld via YT a shite load of people have done just that. Having a friend teach you or taking a class would be better but that may not be a simple of cheap thing to just learn how to "glue" non structural metal together but the learning curve would probably be more vertical.
Project Farm has a video comparing a bunch of cheap MIG/flux core welders all the way up to a Lincoln and it gives you a short hand to get the best bang for the buck,
You obviously need to research the basic PPE and other items you need to get started.
