I want to get into carving wood bowls

Is there any place in the BR area that can get me started on the right foot? Classes? Places that sell everything I need to get started?

LSU Leisure Classes - I used to work at a cabinet shop with the instructor, Terry Landry.
Class info is toward the bottom of the page. Terry could easily teach you bowl turning. He is one of the best woodworkers I've ever seen.

My SIL's step-dad is into woodworking and makes some beautiful stuff. His bowls are amazing.
I hope you're detail oriented, because it looks like a lot of work and attention to detail to me.

If you really want to get into it, man, try smoking a little weed beforehand. The bowl you make will probably look like shite, but you will be totally into it.
