I think the worst thing about social media is the self importance it gives average people.

It used to be that in order to reach a massive audience, you had to have either something important to say or that you earned people’s attention. Now anyone who sits on their couch can send everything dumb though that comes into their head to every person they know plus thousands that they’ve never met. There are people out there with 2 friends in real life but thousands of followers on social media. It makes fringe members of our society believe that they are actually the norm (Antifa, Neo-Nazis, etc).
ETA: Yes, I do see the irony in this post as I spam my opinions online but I think we all know we’re just idiots on an LSU message board.

the worst thing about social media is that it plays to people's insecurities and biases and they lose perspective on whats real and whats merely perception

My favorite thing is when someone posts something batshite on FB and one of their actual friends comments that they disagree and then the OP immediately backtracks in the replies to that comment while being just as extreme on the other replies from likeminded crazy people.

I hate seeing my liberal cousins posting awful things about Trump supporters on their Facebook and then tagging our Nana in Happy Birthday posts. I keep thinking “You do realize that she’s sees every time you call her a Nazi and subhuman right?”.

That's the cancer of it. Makes nobodies feel like they have some massive voice and obligation to "change the world".
I have never once been concerned with that concept. Just want to be a good person to all and earn a decent living.

Well, they have caused numerous people to lose their jobs, livelihoods, and good reputations.

I got off Facebook a long time ago and I've never been happier. No reason to surround yourself with that level of hate and stupidity unless you hate yourself.
I don't use Twitter and I occasionally open Instagram, but that could be on the chopping block soon, too.

It’s not just average people. It’s “celebrities” too. There was no reason whatsoever for LeBron James to give his opinion about Drew Brees’ comment. He acts like he’s the second coming of Christ. He’s just some idiot with a high school education who’s have nothing without sports. He should focus more on his father’s absence from his life instead of on a family man Drew Brees.

Facebook is nowhere as bad as twitter.

I was thinking about this just today when reading my book on Napoleon. He was giving out medals of honor and some people snickered that it was nothing more than baubles. He replied, "I would not say this in public, but in an assembly of wise statesman it should be said. I dont think that the French love liberty and equality: the French are not changed by ten years of revolution: they are what the Gauls were, fierce and fickle. They have one feeling: honour. We must nourish that feeling. The people clamour for distinction.

If Twitter required every single person to use their real name and photo then you'd see a massive change in what kind of shite gets posted there.
