He hesitatingly gave his first name, which is not exactly "giving your name." If he had said "my name is Patrick (whatever his last name is)" might have had a different result.

Not everyone reacts the same when some angry dipshit cop tells him he's being arrested for no reason at all after asking what the warrant is for.

Well no shite. But this is exactly why some people's behavior gets them arrested and other people don't. Patrick had the truth on his side yet he still managed to frick that up.

Or maybe the cops could have asked for his ID after that and not escalated the situation and refused to show him or describe to him the warrant or who they were actually looking for and for what offense. They never gave the guy a fricking chance. He says he just got back from his probation officer. They didn't care. Pathetic, overreaching police work and I can't believe anyone in here is seriously trying to justify it in any way.

No because I would know that I hadn't done anything wrong, therefore I would comply with the officers demands because I would assume there is a misunderstanding and we will clear it up.

You assume those cops would have cleared it up before hauling you off to jail.

Why would anyone who watched that video make that assumption?

Wait... Patrick is the one that fricked up? Jesus Christ, man. Go to North Korea if you don't like civil liberties. I don't think the US is for you.

Not if you're assigning blame, no chance.

I want to MAGA as much as anyone, but some of the blue boot lickers and jock sniffers on this board are completely ridiculous.

This is the definition of inexcusable policing.

The cop telling him he didn't know if he had a warrant while he's cuffed face down on the hood is what really set me off. I would have reacted so much worse than how Patrick did.

North Korea? Settle down drama queen.

They both fricked up dipshit. The fact that the cops did is not exactly up for debate. But when you have the truth on your side you don't make things worse if you value civil behavior. You de-escalate by proving the mistake.

Would not "I'm sorry but you have the wrong guy. My id is in my back pocket. I'm going to slowly reach for it " have been a better play?

Sure.

It's also the cops job to ask for the ID, not Patrick.

I wasn't trying to justify it. I was pointing out that he really didn't give his name in the sense that anyone with any sense knows when a cop asks for your name, he is asking for the full name.

"What is your name?" "My street name is Cool Breeze." That isn't going to work.

Unrelated name story: Years ago, friend of mine was dating this really beautiful girl from B.R. She took him to meet the parents. Father says "what is your name young man?" For reasons I cannot fathom, he said (truthfully) "well my street name is Pokeeasy."

The relationship crumbled a few weeks later.

I wouldn't call someone saying that both sides didn't handle it well as "boot sniffing".

So the burden is on an innocent citizen to de-escalate a non consensual encounter with a police officer?

Go frick yourself.

Obviously. But you don't fight fire with fire. It's easy to talk your way out of a mistake when you know the truth is on your side.

I probably would have as well. I'm not getting detained over a police frick up.

An innocent citizen has 2 choices. It's real simple. You either choose to make a bad situation worse or make a bad situation better.

Being confronted with a mistake doesn't mean it's a free play to make things worse.
