I don't remember if anything came from it, but when housing first began skyrocketing, local cities were debating barracks for city workers to live in during the week.

Theyre paying software engineers $250k to $450k once factoring in bonuses and options. Food and consumer goods are close to the sane price so a lot of that extra income can be used for housing.
A couple making $550k can get a $2m home then sell it when they retire.

Friend of mine was the Dean of Engineering at Stanford who when he first got a professors job was given a hammer and stake told to pick out a lot and build a house. Standford pretty much owns all of palo alto. He built a house and owns the improvement but the University owns the land.
Ten years ago he took me for a drive where Stanford was building 18 houses on University property for coaches as they were told they couldn’t hire the best coaches as housing was too expensive.
I’m no real estate guy but seams nothing has or will change...just like it’s cliche to live in Manhattan.

Almost 4x annual income for a home is still pretty steep to me.

and the entire country subsidizes this crap by allowing insane tax write offs on interest and taxes.

It’s retarded that anyone pays that much for the dinky ugly houses out there

How they hell do college kids (Stanford) afford to live there?

The folks I know who live in the Bay area that grew up there inherited the property they own, then sold it for a profit to buy other properties. Its a different market out there. Really the whole west coast. Seattle is the same way. Rental properties are going to AirBnB so the inventory of rental properties is very limited as well. A normal family from outside the local market would need to find serious cash to move there. Even normal working folks like nurses, firefighters, police, all are now finding themselves with as much as 100 mile commutes from affordable but still expensive properties to get to work.

I guess there is a limit to a salary that would get me out there but i would have to get paid a stupid amount of money to move to California

working class people in California rent, they can't afford homes. Everyone else either did well enough to get a home or inherited the house and will never leave it as it'll continue going up in value until they 'can't say no'
