Coworker (AA associate in the firm) was lamenting on how that Fernando Castille guy was murdered by police, and then he turned on 'that black man in Mississippi named Alton' was was murdered by white cops because he had a concealed weapon on him.

He says it's because white people, in general, are afraid of brown people. He also said none of Castilles/Sterling's transgressions amounted to a summary execution, even if they were present.

I corrected him on misidentifying the location of Alton's death, but punked out and didn't call him out on the possibility that Sterling went for his gun.

I never know how to engage minorities when they open up with stuff like this; is it my place to debate the intricacies of possible oppression? After all, I've never been black.

Most Asians and latinos I know usually side with Caucasians when it comes to this kind of stuff

Me whenever controversial topics of race are brought up in the workplace:

Point being, nothing good can come of having that kind of debate at work.

Wouldn't matter. He wants to believe what he believes. No good would come from arguing about it at work.

I wouldnt have even stuck around long enough to hear that. i dont take part in a discussion with only one perceived acceptable opinion. Thats a waste of time. I also dont listen to your opinion if you have no interest in my opinion . Thats called preaching.

My two favorite topics to talk about in a work setting: race and religion. Both make everyone feel comfortable and at ease.

here is a quote by Mark Twain I live by for these situations

“Never argue with stupid people, they will drag you down to their level and then beat you with experience.”

Every time my coworkers bring up something about "Trump being the worst" or some racially sensitive topic, I just tell them I don't pay attention to the news so I don't care and put my headphones in. I sit in the middle of 4 hardcore liberals.

Rest assured that simply engaging minorities with facts makes you a racist, first and foremost.

If it's at work I would avoid the subject like it's a syphilitic hooker. Any time you can conceivably lose your job over simply divulging personal preferences or opinions, it becomes a matter of self-preservation instinct. Be smart, shut up, don't fall into the trap.

Use my situational awareness to keep my job. If I wanted to keep it. If I did not care about the job I'd run my mouth and let the chips fall where they may.

If you want to keep your job, it may be best not to talk about it.

Just walk away. As someone already said, you can't fix stupid.

If you say anything conflicting with their story, as a white guy, you'll be turned over to HR on a harassment claim.

Just let them dig their own holes.

If you come to them with an open mind, making it clear that you care about their opinion, you respect their opinion, and you want to know why they think the way that they do, not only will they respect you and tell you without calling you a racist, but when you explain your position and refute theirs, they will be respectful and listen. Not only will they listen, but often times they will admit when they are wrong about something and when they actually agree with you on some things. Even the disagreements won't make them angry with or resent you. They expect you to fight them because you hate/fear them. So, if you come to them open minded and respectfully rather than combatively, their entire approach and demeanor changes.
