I’m pretty confident in my attic insulation. It’s colder than a witch’s tit up there right now…..it’s not appreciably warmer than the outside environment. Even my attic access is tighter than Dick’s hatband.

As I said, ice dams can form higher up but the most common spot is the eaves
basically you just want to keep the water from pooling against the ice as the snow above melts?

Stout, do the lack of gutters help the situation

It helps but even without gutters ice dams can still form

Yes

You can literally make a hole in an ice dam much like a river reservoir. Think of it like the Toeldo Bend dam releasing water into the Sabine after a massive flood.

that is why you are supposed to have a weather barrier between your sheathing and roof materials.

Stop cheating out on your builds

We do. Its called felt. I mentioned it in the OP. Felt is water proof but water can still pool and get under the felt seams.

Not every roof in LA has ice and water shield on the eaves. Most only have it in valleys

Do you even know the difference between felt and an ice shield?

Stout, can you physically see an ice dam or do you just have to rake all of the snow off the eaves of the house?

Straight from my roof quote in September. Got it replaced then:

6
Ice & Water Shield
Ice and Water Shield will be applied in valleys and low sloped areas.

So maybe I'm better than normal.

An ice dam can form under the snow

In 2021 you could see them in some cases because that was ice and sleet

This is powdery snow and will be harder to spot. That's why it's best to knock it off the eaves.

I promise you people up north are very educated on ice dams whether they build houses or not

Bucky knows what he is talking about. Many people think stuff like that can't happen in Louisiana so they probably ignored his warning.

I am telling people I saw it firsthand as recently as 2021 in Louisiana

Thanks for posting this. I just went around the perimeter of the house with a plastic leaf rake and pulled down about a foot up of snow.

I live in a ranch house with a shallow roof so I have less gravity working for me.

First thing tomorrow gonna make another pass on a ladder.

Maybe

This snow is drier and not as dense

This may limit the amount of dams at the drip edge and gutters

That's really kind of you but homeboy was whining about not getting a pat on the internet back because nobody acknowledged him posting similar info yesterday.

No. I was chuckling at the people that don't deal with snow regularly dismissing sage advice.

But hey, you do you.

Hopefully so but it's a better safe than sorry situation
