I just replaced my roof in September. No way in hell I'm dealing with leaks.

I'll be out there going around this big arse house shortly.

We started to melt here in CenLa and I had some major leaks because of this last snow. Guess I know what I’ll be doing tomorrow when it is 14 degrees!

I have a coworker that is from Maine and he says to prevent ice dams, fill a few old socks with rock salt and place them every so often on the edge of the roof. It’ll give the melting water a path to drain.

People probably overlooked it but some people don't listen to warnings as you can see some were mocking me ITT until they realized this was a real issue.

I have exactly zero rock salt on hand but that is good advice

I will carefully use a torch if I have to in order to break dams

Pull the snow off your roof over the eaves to help mitigate the issue.

Got like a 25 foot roof line so not much I can do because I don’t want to die on a ladder tonight

Part of my roof has eaves that high. I just left it and will pray nothing happens.

I have ice and water shield for 2 rows all around the perimeter of my house and in all the valleys, no gutters. You think I'll be okay? It's on the side of the house with 10/12 pitch where the most accumulation is.

Sounds like you should be but just FYI ice dams can form higher than the eaves. The eaves are the most common spot but that doesn't mean it's the only spot they can form.

At least a few feet if you can but I would go as far as you can reach safely

Yeah mines like that as well.

I had a light changing pole that I used to get at least the first foot or so...

Some parts are just not possible without a ladder and probably some dikes

I thought I’d melt some snow a few years ago for toilet flushing, would’ve used all my propane for maybe 3 gallons of water.

I was able to knock 3-4 feet off at the edge of the roof all around my house. Hope that does it.

Thanks for the heads up. I have a small house with no gutters and a 6/12 pitch and no valleys but I do like that other guy. First thing in the morning I am going spray it with the water hose and melt the snow around the eves. I guess as cold as it is getting tonight I should ok till then?
